Matthias, I would recommend looking through the on-line tutorials offered by the commercial implementations (at www.renderx.com, www.antennahouse.com) first in order to learn about XSL.
Then, run each of the FOP examples in the examples/fo directory of the FOP distribution. Take notes on what you can use for your own work--look at the underlying code. Although in a ruder tense than I would use, I think Michael Kay's recent advice for an XSLT newbie [1] may be relevant here. Learn a bit more before you start working!
