Can use awt but not pdf

I am trying to create a pdf file from xsl and xml files but when I start 
fop nothing is printed on the screen and fop does not end.  Fop also 
does not use any cpu resources when it freezes.

I have tried with some of the other output formats and the only one that 
seems to work is awt.

Any help is greatly accepted.
