DocBook will make a fine test case for the new FOP, though. If the 
upcoming version can handle all the things that DocBook can do, it'll be a 
truly excellent tool.

The development code is not ready for general use, in particular
it lacks the features you asked for, and I suspect the DocBook
generated XSLFO will trigger quite a few more problems.
