Rico, Can you briefly describe what you mean by "the lack of proper support for other fonts in FOP"? What do you find lacking?
I'm embedding FOP in an Oracle Reports server to support multi-byte languages (Japanese, Chinese, etc.) using the Arial Unicode MS font. While I have not done extensive testing, everything seems to be generating correctly to PDF.
