The first thing is getting a development environment setup. For a development environment we have a Vagrant based deployment tool to configure and setup a development in a VM (you can also use the tooling on your own box if you don't want to use Vagrant) [1]. We are happy to answer any questions you have about getting started with it. Further, there are some environments that have been added to aide with other areas as well. For example, you ask about hammer development, there is a Vagrant box setup that will create a VM configured to allow hammer development with lots of plugins, and useful tools to take you from nothing to developing [2].
