Go ahead and remove the old nodes whenever you want.  I agree that
relative to the new machines they can only be a bottleneck.  After
that it will be easier to migrate the remaining VMs around while
updating the infrastructure.  ☺

No rush, though, as long as they aren't holding you up any.
