I also think a seperate JPA cartridge with variant support would be 
good. We could start developing this one within the Hibernate Cartridge 
and once it has reached an acceptable state seperate it and create the 
cartridge project. The EJB3 cartridge creates already some JPA 
annotations. Maybe we look at it, too.
