InWEnt's
Introductory Seminar on Peace Building and Conflict Management
will be held for four days in Surabaya from 28 ? 31 July 2004.
Registration fee 100.000 Rupiah per day for non-InWEnt scholars and 50.000
Rupiah per day for former InWEnt scholars.
Rationale
Peace and non-violent forms of dealing with conflict have engendered the
interest of many individuals and organizations in development work
worldwide. Inspired by this expanding peace-building endeavor, InWEnt
Capacity Building International, Germany, initiated a series of programs
that explored conflict management and conflict transformation methodologies
in the different levels and sectors of society.
In 2002, InWEnt conducted three regional conferences in Asia, Africa and
Latin America that explored the integration of peace-building and conflict
management into its programs. It also commissioned a research study of
"Managing Conflict ? Building Peace", a pilot study in the Philippines that
was geared towards strengthening the capacities of InWEnt's scholars.
Based on that study, InWEnt has now designed a series of seminars in the
region that will give an introduction to the topic of conflict management
and peace building. There will be seminars at the national level in
Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam, followed by a regional
conference later this year.
The Seminar in Surabaya will be open not only to InWEnt scholars but to all
whose professional or social activities would require that they learn about
how to deal with conflict. Scholars of InWEnt, scholars of the other German
foundations, and all whose place in society exposes them to the topic of
conflict are invited to apply for participation.
Seminar Objectives
At the end of the seminar, the participants will be able to:
- Understand the nature, types, origin and sources of conflict;
- Increase their awareness of the economic, political and social
conflicts that exists in their country;
- Analyze conflicts using different Conflict Analysis tools;
- Identify the different approaches to conflict resolution and conflict
transformation;
- Assess their own conflict management style;
- Transform conflict situations into possible areas for growth and
opportunity;
- Develop communication, negotiation and mediation skills;
- Map out re-entry plans and sustainable peace building strategies that
can be done in their family, work and social context so they can be active
and responsible citizens in their country, individually and collectively.
