1. NSW Ministry for Science and Medical Research
    Connect 2005 Studentships

The NSW Ministry for Science and Medical Research has made available a number
of studentships, valued at $200 each, to NSW students wishing to attend Connect
2005 (July 3 7, Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre). The Ministry for
Science and Medical Research (MSMR) Connect 2005 Studentships will be
administered by the NSW Branch of the RACI. A condition of the award is that
the student will present a paper (poster or oral) at Connect 2005. All
abstracts submitted by students of NSW institutions will automatically be
considered for an MSMR Connect 2005 Studentship. The principal criteria for
selection are the quality and significance of the work to be presented. All
else being equal, preference will be given to students attending academic
institutions outside the Sydney metropolitan region in view of the greater
travel and accommodation costs associated with attending Connect 2005.
Successful applicants will be notified by 1 May 2005.

Abstracts are due 28th February 2005, and can be submitted on line at:

2. THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES
     CHEMICAL SOCIETY

THE ANDREWS LECTURES 2005

The Society is pleased to announce that the Andrews Lecturer for 2005 is
Professor Michael Paddon-Row, Scientia Professor of Chemistry, University of
New South Wales. Professor Paddon-Row will give a series of three lectures as
indicated below. Details of the location of each lecture are given with the
abstracts on the following pages. Society members and visitors are cordially
invited to attend.

Friday 4:45 pm, 25 February, Webster A

The Character of LongRange Intramolecular Electron Transfer Processes: TB or
Not TB? That is the Question!

Over the past two decades substantial progress has been made in delineating the
mechanism of long-range electron transfer (ET). This lecture presents a
somewhat personal account of how using a combination of photoelectron
spectroscopy, Koopmans theorem calculations, synthesis of novel
donor-{saturated hydrocarbon bridge}-acceptor bichromophoric systems and
photophysical studies one of the key questions in ET was solved, namely the
unequivocal demonstration that through-bond (superexchange) coupling can
promote rapid ET (>109 s-1) over distances exceeding 12 and the determination
of the distance dependence of through-bond-mediated ET rates.

Tuesday 2:00 pm, 1 March, CLB 4

Electron Transfer Processes Using Giant Multichromophoric Systems

Thursday 5:00 pm, 3 March, Biomed F
