On my computer (PSPad 4.5.3 (2262) /Win XP /1280 x 1024 /Normal fonts) it seems that the problem exists for all fonts without native bold version. PSPad works well only for fonts with such version - i.e. Courier New, Lucida Typewriter Sans, Consolas. The best font with native bold is, for my taste, Bitstream Vera Sans Mono....
However, majority of the fixed width fonts have no native bold version, so this is quite a problem. There is another, probably connected, problem - bold versions of the fonts cannot be set as a default for formating, no matter if "Syntax" option is on or off. -- <http://forum.pspad.com/read.php?4,35405,39914> PSPad freeware editor http://www.pspad.com
