Jan, yes it exists! Most PDF viewers send complete information (sometimes only approximate) of the location where the user double-clicked.
This allows the reader to locate - immediately - which **.tex* file of your sources the user double-clicked on. When I worked with this (reverse search) coding in Tinn-R - it's been many years, and it still works well today - I noticed that not all viewers have this feature. I suggest Tinn-R users use Sumatra, as it is very accurate in sending information.
