Brad,
Did the footprint already exist, or did you create it in that session?  I recall 
having a somewhat similar problem when I had placed a part & updated the PCB without 
having saved my changes in the PCB lib -- so I got the (disk) version which didn't 
have my latest changes.  (This would only apply to your case if the new footprint had 
been created by copying the old one, then changing but not saving it prior to 
placement.)

        thanks for the tip, that would be a little easier then the selecting
all the components involved and then changing through a third footprint as I
did. No idea as to how this happens though?
