As a long time user of both 16 bit versions of Protel and the more recent
versions, my opinion of the Gerber file generation is that it is not too
bad, but there are aspects (which I have mentioned in previous posts) where
I think that it could be improved. Amongst other things, be wary about using
octagonal pads in your design; in fact, I would suggest that you *don't* use
such pads *unless* you know how to deal with the current deficiencies in
Protel concerning these.

The Power Print Server is not the easiest aspect to master, but it is very
powerful in terms of what it can achieve. Protel has made some attempt to
make it easier for neophytes to use, by permitting users to select from a
set of predefined sets of Printout definitions. And when you have created a
set of Printout Definitions to match your requirements, this can be imported
into yet other DDB files, for use with other PCBs. So while there are some
aspects where improvements could (and even should) be made (and some
improvements have been made to this since the Power Print Server was first
released), it is still a very agreeable and useful aspect of Protel 99 SE.

It is my hope that ongoing development of the "core" Schematic, PCB, and
AutoRouter Servers is not overlooked by Protel in favour of providing yet
more Servers. I have good reason to believe that the next major version will
provide yet more Servers than present, but while I accept that there are
various reasons why this will be the case, I will still be spending most of
my time using the "core" Servers instead.

Regards,
Geoff Harland.
