i think if you started from other linuxes like mandrake, turbo, or any
previous fedora .bash_profile should be the first choice
because default terminal is bash, you could also try .bashrc and
/etc/rc.d/rc.local is also the way
The above two are the hidden files in the home directory

in .bash_profile i could do

PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin
export PATH

i think all three places and if you use other shell as default those .
scripts could also be one way to get started with.
