Microsoft is a company... In Bill Gates' own words " Microsoft led the
software age it might not lead the internet age"... So, it is premature
to suggest that it will live on forever.... prehaps impossible....
Open Source on the other hand is an idea... and Ideas never die.....
This community is not just a bundle of anti microserfs as microsoft
likes to portray but more innovators and lets say hackers not afraid to
give it an extra notch of imrovement..... one step closer to
perfection....
My 2 yrs of Linux has led me to believe that microsoft sent us
technologically 10 decades behind.... as Eric Raymond, the author of
"Cathedral And the Bazzar", perhaps the handbook of today's open source
developers said "We did better than that in 1975"!!!! People are
recognising this today....
Microsoft's biggest clients are the multinational companies with a huge
base... and the general people saying " I don't need your friggn code,
let this be done with a click", hmmm microsoft gives that.... Still a
lot of large processing is done is .NET framework... there is a proof
that even the Department of Defense uses NTFS... owing to its
security... The Antitrust allegations and the failure of the FBI to
break down Microsoft into smaller companies as the federal government
had done for AT&T and a century ago to the Rockefeller's company or was
it Andrew Carnegie? Well I think it was the oil guy, Rockefeller... u
get the point right?
So, it's hard to kill microsoft.. yet the alliance of the tech giants
like sun and IBM to promote Linux has been fruitful to the open source
community....
So, what the Nepali developers have to understand is that there is
money in Open Source... you cannot compete with microsoft or any big
company at this level.... u put 10 bucks, they put 1000 bucks and the
list goes on till they buy you out.. a recent example being the
sysinternals.com.... hmm I guess vista will be more powerpacked and
will be ready to give a hard punch....
The only way we are going to beat them is to make ourselves united,
collaborating at some points yet competing at others.... maybe better
business practices win in the long run but still you won't be
reinventing the wheel all over again... most closed cathedral type
companies do.... yes there are patent problems...
my view... Microsoft is here to stay for a while but in the long run
Open Source will win....
