Seems like better to take a closer look at the Google's Android - http://code.google.com/android/download.html
It uses power of Java development techniques, like Unit Testing, Refactorng, etc. and power of an IDEs, like Eclipse together. If you interested in Open Source development with Java, the Google's Android platform provides very good opportunity. Regards!
