Dear Engineering Students,

*Student Platform for Engineering Education Development* is a global,
non-profit student organisation that functions as an interdisciplinary
network of engineering students, who aspire to provide opinion and create an
impact on future development of engineering education and its effect on
society and environment. SPEED was founded by student participants of the
1st Global Student Forum (GSF) in October 2006 during the 5th Global
Colloquium on Engineering Education (GCEE), organised by the American
Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The
following years, SPEED co-organised the 2nd and the 3rd GSF with ASEE in
Istanbul, Turkey and Cape Town, South Africa, and in cooperation with IFEES
the 4th GSF in Bhubaneswar, India. SPEED hopes to expand the Global Student
Forum initiative significantly in the coming years through global
cooperation and feedback from students and through other activities to
further enrich engineering education curricula worldwide.

"GloCal Engineer: Qualities and Competencies"

Student Platform for Engineering Education Development (SPEED) in
cooperation with International Federation of Engineering Education Societies
(IFEES) and Russian Association for Engineering Education (RAEE) will gather
100 student leaders in St. Petersburg, Russia, May 15th-23rd, 2009 for the
Global Student Forum (GSF) on Engineering Education to discuss the ideas on
Qualities and Competencies of a Globally competent and Locally applicable
engineer. The fusion of Global and Local skills provided a new term: GloCal
Engineer and the overall topic of the event is therefore: "GloCal Engineer:
Qualities and Competencies".

The GSF event is part of 3rd IFEES Global Summit, which will draw academics,
representatives from government, industry and non-profit organizations, and
increasingly students from around the world to discuss issues pertinent to
engineering education.

The GSF, is a one week event, organised by students. Engineering Students
and young professionals will discuss issues embedded in topic: GloCal
Engineer: Qualities and Competencies. They will participate in workshops
aimed at providing them with tools to find innovative solutions with the
global perspective and apply them in their local communities.

Students will be a part of an international experience, submerged in the
atmosphere of cross-cultural communication and creative thinking. They will
get a chance to learn about already existing student projects, get involved
and/or start their own regional and global initiatives with the aim of
curriculum innovation and development in alignment with global economy.

The Global Student Forum program will focus on developing thinking from a
global perspective and providing a local applicability to students ideas.
Students will share ideas and discuss the skills and competencies of a
modern successful engineer and how to implement such current practices into
curriculum in order to improve engineering education. Students will
participate in a series of workshops, discussions, presentations and
creation of action plans that will enable them to become a factor of change
in the development of engineering education curriculum.

Dear all,

Now that, thanks to your input amongst others, the bylaws of the
organization are taking better shape, the SPEED team feels ready to
start up the membership process by inviting the interested people to
join the organization! This email will tell you what is this about and
how can you get involved.

## SPEED membership ####

Membership in SPEED is a part-time, voluntary commitment undertaken by
students who share our common purpose of advancing engineering
education through student involvement. Members of SPEED contribute to
the development of the organization's initiatives, by taking on a set
of tasks that usually match of their competences with the needs of the
organization.

Here's a few examples of the work done by SPEED members:
- fundraising (drafting sponsorship proposals, networking with
potential sponsors, developing projects' budgets, ...)
- program development (inviting speakers, developing schedule of
events, coordinating logistical needs, promotion of the event, ...)
- internal coordination (reporting to SPEED mailing list, working with
SPEED website and SPEED wiki, attending and organizing chat meetings
and conference calls, ...)

Due to the limited size of the group, as well as the early stage of
our development, it is common for SPEED members to take on a variety
of tasks throughout their work in the organization, contributing not
only to a dynamic and stimulating environment, but most of all to a
wonderful opportunity to learn on various fronts about organizational
work in all of its facets. In other words, there's a lot to do, but
there's also a lot to learn!

Finally, we understand that everybody's first commitment is towards
their studies and we try to support each other to make sure that being
good SPEED members doesn't mean being bad engineering students.
Flexibility is the key, as we need to be able to take on tasks and
work a bit more in times when others are not fully available, in order
for them to be able to do the same for us when we're not available
ourselves. The bottom line, however, is that at least a few hours
every week are required to successfully contribute to the activities
of the organization. We hope and believe that a lot of it will be not
only rewarding and contributing to your professional growth, but fun
and shaping you as a person as well. All in all, we're a group of
friends too and we want to enjoy the time with each other as friends do.
:-)

## How to apply ####

The process is the following:
1) Submit a motivation letter (1 page maximum - around 300-500 words)
to [email protected] in order for us to be able to gauge
your commitment to the organization (why do you want to be in SPEED?),
the added value you're able to bring to SPEED and your expectations
towards the work to be done; include in the application what you'd
prefer to do (or learn how to do) in the team. Feel free to add
anything relevant about previous similar experiences, current skills
and areas of interest and how can they help you in better contributing
to our organization.
2) The existing group of SPEED members (currently: Adam, Amy, David,
Jennifer, Julia, Yvonne and me) will have 1 week of time to review the
motivation letter of any applicant, starting from their submission
date/time. In this period, we might ask you a few additional questions
in order for us to be able to better understand what's the best place
for you in the team.
3) At the end of that week, if no objections arise, the new member
will be automatically added to the SPEED members' mailing list and
involved in the activities of the team. If objections arise, we will
first try to settle them with a discussion and, if necessary, with a
vote (simple majority needed). We will let you know about any notice
(acceptance/rejection) as soon as we can.

Feel free to contact me for any clarifications. I'm looking forward to
hear from you and welcome you to the team.
:-)

Ciao,
Nicolò
