I had something like this happen to me. I was pleasantly
surprised when, after a few minutes of venting, I braced myself
to re-write it all and started a fresh commit and the whole text
of the previous comment was offered as a starting point for the
new commit's comment.

I believe that the text is squirreled away in the _FOSSIL_ file
when commit fails and will likely come back when you next commit
again.
