I don't think it is confirmed. 
Reading the thread, it is clear that your panic destroyed your files, not 
fossil.
You can do it again with "rm -r *" if you liked the experience. :P
BTW, I lost my works many times (not because of fossil) and IMHO it is GOOD! 
As a rule, the code I wrote on place of lost code was always better quality.
