Likely part of the issue is my local configuration. From limited clue and what I can see/read now, disabling IPv6 completely is not exactly trivial to do here. This is a NetBSD host; the host which worked fine (and happened to be located behind another router as well) was a Linux host - network-config differs quite a lot.
