You need to have the kernel 2.4.31 installed from the acmesystems SDK I did
not know Debian and VMware sorry

don't know the rt73 driver sorry. My source is set with the:
rt2570 for the Linksys WUSB54GV4 or the D-Link DWL-122 B1
