WideString on Windows has no reference counting, thus everytime a WideString is assigned it needs to be copied.

Yes, if you use the set of memory allocators I mentioned the field *will* be used. COM marshalling. No com, no count. simple as that. It is unused, because the memory manager doesn't use it. com is not implemented, unless you use a com based memory manager. No com, no reference count.
