IMHO you are right, but the big difference is of course that the rest of the
whole computer industry pretty much hasn't decided to stick to complex
values as the standard.
There exist math apps, doing computations with complex numbers, and
there exist text processors, dealing with Unicode. But what about the
99.9% of *other* applications?
