the (*$N+*) comment switches on the nested comment option
In FPC you can use

{$modeswitch nestedcomments}
or
{$modeswitch nestedcomments+}

to switch them on and

{$modeswitch nestedcomments-}

to switch them off.

They are enabled by default in the modes fpc (default mode) and objfpc. The modeswitch directive can only be used at the beginning of a program/unit though (basically till before the uses section is parsed).
