I use a similar amount of work--don't have Illustrator, but have CorelDraw 12. We actually use AutoCAD 2006, but Corel won't open anything newer than 2000, so I save the CAD drawing down to 2000 (actually, I have AutoCAD set to save as 2000 by default for this reason), then open in CorelDraw, clean up any extraneous lines and export to wmf, choosing "text" when prompted to "export text as text or curves". Have also tried exporting to .tif and .png but the lines seem clearest with wmf's.
