Deirdre, Don't just import the formats. Put a copy of the "Good" TOC in the directory with your new book and make sure that the file name is exactly what it will be in the new book. Now generate/update and the data from the new book should replace what was in the original TOC.
If you still get cross references from the wrong book, temporarily rename the directory where the other book resides so that your new TOC can't find it. Then you can point it in the right direction.
