Nancy,
There is an Adobe document that discusses this very task. I don't know if it
will solve your specific issues, but it might be a place to start.

Subject: FM Importing Figures from Database

Hi, everyone.

I posted this question to techwr-l about a week ago but received no replies.
I'm hoping that some Framers may have experience they can share.

We currently store all figures in Windows Explorer directories, and import
by reference into FrameMaker documents. We figure a database would eliminate
our current, frequent duplication of files and confer other benefits as
well.

But I don't understand how a db and FM interact. Is it possible to import a
figure by reference into a FrameMaker file from a database? Can you point to
a db directory the way you would to a regular Windows Explorer directory?

Thanks.
