If the file is Word 2007 (and presumably 2010), you can make a copy of the file, change the extension from .docx to .zip. Uncompress the zip and the graphics (Word optimized and originals) will all be in a media folder. (This works for PowerPoint 2007 too.) I have not tried taking a Word 2003 file and saving it as 2007 to process this way, so I don't know if it will work or not.
