Hi Fred,

My first thought was to use $subsectionnum in just the way you describe 
($volnum is in use), but I was hoping for something less kludge-like. Maybe 
there isn't a more elegant solution.

Are you already using $volnum for something? If not, use it for the u.c. Roman 
number in the section heading and let $chapnum continue to be used for the 
Arabic numbers everywhere else. Just make sure that the numbering properties 
are set identically for both variables.
