The vendors (RenderX and Antenna House) also have some good educational materials and examples. For XSLT, I recall that Tidewell's book was a good primer, but other authors (Kay, Tennyson) provide much more depth and breadth with a wider variety of examples. The XSLT and XPath Recommendations are also good source material -- they can be read and understood by mortals (unlike the XSL-FO Recommendation). Nothing can come close to a real-world project as a motivator for understanding these technologies and exposing your knowledge gaps.
