I just finished an 800-page catalog using save as PDF. It was suggested to use this option since we were running four-color. Well it worked and didn't. It took all of our color .tif images and .eps images and rendered them correctly. My pantone colors for section bleed tabs, all but one, came out as spot color and had to be converted at the printer.
My Helvetica fraction fonts got substituted and I had two process the files again, the same way, and they came out with the correct fonts. Spent WAY too much time fixing files. Also, when I ran the index my page numbers came out backwards in some cases. As an example -- 546-548, 13-18, 20 -- instead of in order. Frame 9 has really steered me back to my old MAC, running classic and Frame 7. That was consistent and results were as expected. If it was anything other than Adobe PDF, then you had no end of problems. It was my understanding that with Frame 7, "Save as PDF" would automatically use the Adobe PDF print definitions and thus work as advertised. I've never had a problem with it, maybe because my Default Printer under Frame is always Adobe PDF. As always, YMMV. Ever. Many folks have posted problems with this feature ranging across four versions of Frame that I know of, and I'm a relative newcomer. A few people have posted that it works for them, and more power to them. For myself, I've given up ever even attempting it.
