Hello again, Framers, I never saw my original question appear in this digest but two kind souls have already responded so apparently some people somewhere received my posting...
I want to update this issue and report that "MamaRed" offered a solution that solved the problem (if not the mystery): She suggested to NOT use the default "Reformat using current document's catalogs" when I imported my text inset but to select the "Retain source's formatting" option. Both the host and source docs have identical paragraph and table formats, so I don't know why this worked but it did. Thanks to MamaRed and also to Baruch Brodersen, both of whom offered help (and Baruch also suggested I post this to the list as a Solved issue).
