In my opinion, the Character Designer should have "From Style" rather than "As Is". The "As Is" setting impedes experimentation with the settings.
I agree with Matt: I teach never to edit character tags with text selected. There is a method to do it safely with text selected, but it requires more clicks of the mouse.
