Agreed. I always defer to the published standards for the industry I'm writing for. In my case, that would be the International System of Units, ASTM, and IEEE. See http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/Units/ and https://www.astm.org/FormStyle_for_ASTM_STDS.html in addition to the link provided by Robert.
