*Jonas Mekas 100!*
In 2022, the world and Lithuania celebrate the life and work of Jonas
Mekas, one of the country’s most prominent cultural figures of the 20th and
21st centuries and a global cultural phenomenon in his own right,
considered by many to be the “godfather of avant-garde cinema”.

Throughout his life, Mekas always emphasized and cherished his Lithuanian
roots. After fleeing the foreign occupation of his native land, he arrived
in New York City, in his own words “at exactly the right moment”, joining
thousands of others escaping the devastation wrought by destructive
ideologies and tyrannical regimes in Europe. One might say that Mekas left
one village, his native Semeniškiai in northern Lithuania, and immersed
himself in the life of another – the Village thriving in and around lower
Manhattan, and in its landmark publication, the Village Voice, helping to
shape American and global culture so profoundly in the latter half of the
20th century.

This centennial celebration, Jonas Mekas 100!, seeks to expand global
recognition of his work and encourage a deeper exploration of Mekas’
prolific contributions to cinema, film criticism, cultural organization,
and, in particular, his body of poems and prose, now published in
Lithuanian, French, German, English, Japanese, Hebrew, and many other
languages.

The centennial program features over 50 events in an expanding list of
countries, including: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece,
Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan,
Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The vast scope of
Mekas’ contribution to global cultural is examined through film screenings
and retrospectives, exhibitions, readings, workshops, new publications and
translations of Mekas’ writings, and concerts celebrating the spirit of his
work, among other events.

The centennial program is a joint international collaboration between
leading art and cinema organisations, curators, publishers, the global
network of Lithuanian cultural attachés, the Estate of Jonas Mekas, and the
Lithuanian Culture Institute.

*REFRESH: *CYANOBACTERIA OFFER PERSPECTIVE ON OURSELVES
This art-science collaboration looks at the microscopic ways cyanobacteria
move, on an individual level and in colonies. If we study these organisms
and their varied forms, we might discover ways to improve our future.

On display at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science in the Summit Stage and
Expedition Health, March 2022 - Fall 2022

The cells in your body take in oxygen and sweep out waste products like
carbon dioxide (CO2). Microscopic cyanobacteria use photosynthesis to work
in reverse, breathing in CO2 and pumping out oxygen.

Three billion years ago, cyanobacteria created Earth’s oxygenfilled
atmosphere, supporting the evolution of creatures like us. Today, they
provide one-quarter of the planet’s oxygen, and cyanobacteria like
spirulina provide us with food.

Researchers believe that cyanobacteria —which need only sunlight, CO2, and
water to thrive— could offer solutions to our changing climate. They might
help reduce CO2 on a grand scale, contribute to biofuel production, and
support long-term space travel. This diverse group of organisms offers a
symbolic warning as well: when colonies of cyanobacteria become too dense
or stressed, they can run out of nutrients or be destroyed by their own air
pollution.

Made with the collaborative efforts of filmmaker Erin Espelie and the
Jeffrey Cameron Laboratory at the University of Colorado Boulder, which
created a customized microscope system specifically tailored for long-term
growth and quantitative imaging of cyanobacterial cells; with special
thanks to microbiologist and cinematographer Evan Johnson and artists Nima
Bahrehmand, Travis Austin, Will Alstetter, as well as NEST Studio for the
Arts.

*VISIONS: HÁ TERRA! by Ana Vaz*
As part of its new online cinema series, VISIONS presents *HÁ TERRA!* by
Ana Vaz with a text by Ralitsa Doncheva | 2016 | 16mm to digital | 12 mins
37 secs

In *Poetics of Cinema*, Raul Ruiz writes that “films are like human beings,
you look at them and they look back at you”. I think about this idea while
watching *HÁ TERRA!* imagining the film’s body as a wild animal that preys
on me as much as I glimpse at it. Does it sense my shame, my fear?

I experience *HÁ TERRA!* as a choreography of gestures and gazes that hits
like a rock. A bodily cinema where the eye blurs into the ear, ending in
the shape of a mouth. Where one gazes at an animal, animal-like, and
listens to the stories vibrating in the landscape while touching it.

Where am I in this dream? Perhaps under the hand, hiding. Without a sense
of self, levitating. Like a piece of clothing, floating at sea. There is no
understanding without feeling, no justice without poetry. There is no
encounter without a loss. No moving forward without paddling back to a
fractured past that, like the swollen foot of the girl in the film, changes
with the moon’s phases. Before language, before language. Back to the land.

*DEPRIVATION* / 16MM FILM WITH OPTICAL SOUND - CAITY ARTHUR (BROOKLYN, NY,
US) & CHANDLER ARTHUR (BROOKLYN, NY, US) Just a year after losing their
partner, Chuck is still battling nightmares and paranoia, leading them to
believe that what appears in the shadows is all in their mind. They quite
quickly find themself unable to explain the unusual hauntings and surreal
visions that seem to keep intervening. Are these delusions of sleep
paralysis a product of repressed grief, or are they actually real? Centered
on the repercussions of trauma, *Deprivation* asks what limitations there
are when it comes to blurring reality from personal fear. Free, All Ages &

CURTIS' *TRAUMAZONE* + STONE's *UKRAINE ON FIRE* +
In our ongoing collaboration with our fave non-profit Humanity Now,
benefiting international war refugees, here's a program of mostly docs
on Ukraine and Russia. Featured is the new and utterly astonishing
*TraumaZone* (*Ep.7*) by UK comp-doc master Adam Curtis! The last of his 7
hours on the “Fall of Democracy” in Russia contextualizes Putin's rise and
posits Ukraine as a casualty of the Old Empire's political and economic
implosion. The first hour of our program is constituted by hefty excerpts
from a pair of provocative histories of the past decade
of Ukrainian upheaval: Eugeny Afineevsky's *Winter on Fire *and Oliver
Stone's (!) *Ukraine on Fire*, the latter offering a little-seen
perspective on Ukrainian antisemitism and that nationalism for which the
Kremlin reserves the word “Nazism”. Comparing Stone's lighting-fast editing
style to the decidedly elliptical leaps of Curtis proves a special treat,
especially with our added exemplar of Dziga Vertov, whose *Enthusiasm* pops
up. AND the downright jaw dropping *Playing Apocalypse*,
by UCB grad Aleksandra Simonova (in person), which parlays her
documentation of Odessa's historical role-players in scary Cold War tunnels
into a larger allegory on dystopian subcultures in the beleaguered country.

*EC: GEORGE LANDOW, AKA OWEN LAND*
“The unique contribution of Land’s work lies in the fusion of intellectual
reason and, significantly, the humor that distances it from the supposedly
‘boring’ world of avant-garde film. Having explored the basic properties of
the celluloid strip itself in early works such as FILM IN WHICH THERE
APPEAR…, his attention turned to the spectator in a series of ‘literal’
films that question the illusionary nature of cinema through the use of
word play and visual ambiguity. His work often parodies experimental film
itself by mimicking his contemporaries and mocking the solemn approach of
film theorists and scholars.” –Mark Webber, TWO FILMS BY OWEN LAND

*JEAN-LUC GODARD (1930-2022)*
To mark the passing of one of the titans of cinema, we present two of
Jean-Luc Godard’s most rarely-screened series of films: the politically and
aesthetically radical works he made between 1968-71 – including those
produced as part of the Dziga Vertov Group, in collaboration with
Jean-Pierre Gorin and others – and his later, magisterial
collage-work, *HISTOIRE(S)
DU CINÉMA*, which is often cited as one of the finest achievements of the
second half of his career. Special thanks to Bret Berg (American Genre Film
Archive) and Louise Paraut (Gaumont).

THE DZIGA VERTOV GROUP
Upon the completion of *WEEKEND* in 1967, Jean-Luc Godard shifted gears to
engage more directly with the radical political movements of the era – thus
creating a new kind of film, or, as he eventually put it: “new ideas
distributed in a new way.” This method involved collaborating with the
precocious young critic and journalist, Jean-Pierre Gorin. Both as a
two-person unit, and as part of the loose collective known as the Groupe
Dziga Vertov (named after the early 20th-century Russian
filmmaker/theoretician), Godard and Gorin would realize “some political
possibilities for the practice of cinema” and craft new frameworks for
investigating the relationships between image and sound, spectator and
subject, cinema and society.

These films, long out-of-circulation except in film dupes and bootleg video
copies, represent one of the least-known chapters in Godard’s extraordinary
career. They provide a crucial glimpse of his radicalization, and of the
aesthetic dialogue between Godard and Gorin that, in essence, invented a
modern militant cinema. As Godard told an English journalist of the era,
film is not a gun, but “a light which helps you check your gun.”

For this series we present screenings of three of the Dziga Vertov Group
films (*WIND FROM THE EAST, STRUGGLE IN ITALY, and VLADIMIR AND ROSA*, as
well as two preceding films that led directly to the formation of the group
(*A FILM LIKE ANY OTHER and BRITISH SOUNDS*).

“Are these films ready for a second chance? It would be quite something if
they finally joined the great Godardian corpus. They have been the gaping
wound in the man’s authoritative canon for so long, the films that are
allegedly ‘better read about than seen.’ […] It’s possible that time and
history have caught up with the Dziga Vertov Group, in the sense that two
of the discourses that permeate the films – socialism and fascism – are now
once again very much on the table. This is not to say that ‘Godardian
pedagogy’ will find its rightful place as the aesthetic mode of the 21st
century, but the films’ handmade, declamatory style does fit nicely with
the age of rampant amateur media production and a younger generation for
whom activism and technology are entirely coextensive.” –Michael Sicinski,

*Smears, Tears, and Thumbprints: Queer Coming of Age*
What does it mean to have a body? Why does the concrete feel so soft under
my fingers? Animation is uniquely positioned to examine the intangible and
constructed. From here, above the peg bar, artists sketch a pysche imagined
and a world redeemed.

The films in this program contain a colorful, earnest languidity through a
queer lens exploring family, the body, and the ebbings of the afternoon
tide. Utilizing the inherent reflexivity of animation, these films create
spaces to inhabit both comfort and consolation. Featuring a variety of
animation techniques, these films each live in different sections of the
mind and body united in their explorations of comfort, hope, and
satisfaction.

“The two fundamental works of the graphic cinema from the 1920s made
without animation were Fernand Léger’s *BALLET MÉCANIQUE* and Marcel

*ENTR’ACTE* (1924, 22 min, 35mm)

scenarios. It was automatic cinema. I worked alone. My intention was to set
in motion the compositions I made in photography. As for the camera, I use
it to capture something I do not want to paint. But I am not interested in
producing ‘beautiful photography’ for the cinema.” –Man Ray, “All the Films
I Have Made” (1965)

Marcel Duchamp & Man Ray
*ANEMIC CINEMA* (1926, 7 min, 35mm, silent)
“Duchamp alternates head-on views of his illusion-producing roto-reliefs
with similarly turned discs of words, elaborate French puns printed
spirally, creating a fluctuation of illusory depth within a very narrow
spectrum (from the slightly convex or slightly concave illusions) to the
flat readings. In this, his only film, Duchamp typically crystallized the
significance of the graphic film.” –P. Adams Sitney, VISIONARY FILM

“Since 1950 I have been keeping a film diary. I have been walking around
with my Bolex and reacting to the immediate reality: situations, friends,
New York, seasons of the year. On some days I shot ten frames, on others
ten seconds, still on others ten minutes. Or I shot nothing. When one
writes diaries, it’s a retrospective process: you sit down, you look back
at your day, and you write it all down. To keep a film (camera) diary, is
to react (with your camera) immediately, now, this instant: either you get
it now, or you don’t get it at all.” –Jonas Mekas

*PERCEIVING IN INSECTS*
In the presence of Elio Della Noce and Benoît Grison, biologist and
sociologist of science, specialist in behavioral neuroscience, ethnozoology
and epistemology of life sciences.

After having explored the intimacy of the gaze of pets, the filmmakers
focus here on the complexity of the perception of insects. Experimental
cinema and its "synaesthetic" penchant offer the possibility of playing
with a vast perceptual repertoire: shooting devices (home-made pinhole
cameras, magnifying glasses), "cameraless" animation techniques (film
collages, "phytography") , environmental sound recordings, etc. This set of
techniques designed by the filmmakers visits the wide perceptual field of
insects and expresses their strange way of creating a mesh of living
things. These films therefore translate, through their own craftsmanship,
the frequencies, shapes and colors of images perceived by a bee, the
electromagnetic radiation captured by the eyespots of a caterpillar, the
photoluminescence of fireflies and the dreamy cosmology of a moth. Note
that Karel Doing's film, *The Mulch Spider's Dream* (2018), leaves the
exclusive kingdom of insects and opens up the molecular perception of a
"mulch spider".

*A Curt McDowell Double Header 1: Peed Into the Wind*
Featuring Melinda McDowell in person, and Los Angeles premieres of 16mm
restorations from the Academy Film Archive!

Dirty, playful, bawdy, freaky, raunchy, sexy, brilliant, campy, punky,
puerile, gross, glamorous…there are not enough evocative adjectives to
accurately encompass the innumerable pleasures of Curt McDowell’s
resolutely queer and radically multi-sexual body of film work in all its
florid fecundity.

A contemporary of John Waters and the Kuchar brothers, San Francisco-based
McDowell produced a stimulating body of films between the late 1960s and
his death in 1987 from HIV/AIDS, drawing vividly on his obsessions with
sex, pop music, performance, comedy, melodrama, and the delicious dichotomy
of the gorgeous and the grotesque. Most notorious for his nearly three-hour
horror/comedy/porno/melodrama/cult classic *Thundercrack!* (1975), McDowell
also created numerous hilarious, intimate, audacious, and unexpectedly
profound short films over his tragically short career.

The Academy Film Archive has been home to Curt McDowell’s films since 2014,
and since then has been actively working to restore his entire body of
work. Along with a third accompanying showcase of restorations at the
Academy Museum on December 9 at 10pm, these programs of restored McDowell
films will offer an extensive introduction to an artist his dear friend and
frequent collaborator George Kuchar once described as “cute, controversial,
and not celibate. He was a barrel of laughs and a roller coaster ride to
hell and back. Life for him was a fast track to fast times that included
devilish detours into forbidden erogenous zones.” All films restored by and
courtesy of the Academy Film Archive, with thanks to Melinda McDowell.

Programs and notes by Mark Toscano. Melinda McDowell in person!

McDowell’s first short feature *Peed Into The Wind* is a hilarious satire
on stardom and desire, steeped in comic intrigue and DIY melodrama.
Starring a whole cavalcade of his regular company of performers, *Peed*
anchors a program that also features the metatextual *Truth for Ruth*, his
beloved musical short *Boggy Depot*, and the wonderfully charming and
nearly-never-seen absurdity *The Mean Brothers “Get Stood Up”*. “*Peed Into
The Wind* smears across the screen like one of those dirty underground
comic books. It’s loaded with a lot of big scenes and unusual looking
people that make this epic resemble a clogged toilet. Unfortunately, since
several of the performers were not as loyal as Ainslie Pryor and John
Thomas, the plot is difficult to follow but in no way hinders the
sewer-like sequences. It’s quite enjoyable and possesses the releasing
power of an enema.” - George Kuchar

*Truth for Ruth* (1972) 4m
*The Mean Brothers “Get Stood Up”* (w/ Mark Ellinger) (1973) 3.5m
*Boggy Depot* (w/ Mark Ellinger) (1973) 16.5m

*A Curt McDowell Double Header 2: True, Blue, & Very Taboo*
Melinda McDowell in person! LA premieres of 16mm restorations from the
Academy Film Archive!

McDowell’s short feature *Taboo (The Single & The LP)* is easily one of his
most complex and fascinatingly ambitious films, as it interweaves several
narrative and conceptual threads, which include board games, erotic
obsessions, and an extended rumination on (and dramatization of!) some
mysterious bathroom graffiti. Long thought lost, this singular, memorable
film will be preceded by McDowell’s hilarious and unexpectedly tender home
movie excursion *A Visit to Indiana*, and the surrealist and romantic
fantasia *True Blue & Dreamy*.

Note: This program contains explicit content, including some autopsy
footage.
