*Overexposed: Art, Technology, and the Body*
The advent of cinema in the late 19th century allowed artists and
scientists to record motion for the first time. Developed concurrently,
X-ray technology extended vision beneath the skin, allowing people to view
the body’s interior. Together, these tools produced spectacular new images
that shaped modern conceptions of the body.

Overexposed: Art, Technology, and the Body brings together research-based
and educational films with contemporary artworks by 16 American and
international artists to examine the historical, medical, and
sociopolitical implications of seeing inside the body. The works on view
were created between 1891 and 2025.

*** Works included by Panteha Abareshi, Peggy Ahwesh, Zuza Banasińska,
Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel, Theo Cuthand and Ruth Cuthand,
Anna Kipervaser, Liz Magic Laser, Barbara Hammer, Ana Mendieta, Donald
Rodney, Courtney Stephens, Agnes Questionmark, and Leslie Thornton and Ron
Vawter. ***

The show is organized into three overlapping sections. “Technology and
Power” explores how film and X-ray technologies shaped Western claims to
scientific objectivity. “Limits of the Gaze” features artists who engage
with archives and found footage, and investigate their own bodies to expose
and challenge the normative assumptions embedded in medical images. “Care
and Control” examines how imaging tools have transformed practices of care.
Overexposed invites visitors to reflect on how visualizing the inside of
the body shapes medical knowledge and human experience.

Organized by Sonia Epstein, Curator of Science & Technology

Lead support for Overexposed  was provided by the Alfred P. Sloan
Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Additional
generous support was provided by Romy Cohen, The Gladys Krieble Delmas
Foundation, Elaine Goldman, May & Samuel Rudin Family Foundation, and Doug
Pugh.

*(No) Recess*
Microscope is excited to present “(No) Recess,” a group exhibition opening
Thursday May 14 featuring mostly new and recent paintings, sculptures,
single and multi-channel video, installation, photography, and drawings by
a selection of emerging to established artists including those from our
roster with works by Peggy Ahwesh, Ina Archer, Lili Chin, S Emsaki, Copper
Frances Giloth, Narcisa Hirsch, Chihiro Ito, Hey-Yeun Jang, Marni Kotak,
Jahi Kijo Lendor, Jeanne Liotta, Rachel Phillips, Yao Qingmei, Kevin
Reuning, Lamar Robillard, Joel Schlemowitz, and Matt Town.

The exhibition title “(No) Recess” is partially inspired by the gallery’s
experience during the past month of a sudden move and the resulting break
in our programming, due to the loss of our gallery space, and our return
last week to a new, temporary location in the building next door. It also
refers to the themes of time, transition, disruption, and the fragility of
our lives and experiences that frequently emerge from the highly varied
works.

As a group, the works in “(No) Recess)” point to the contradictions between
one’s intentions for their lives and enjoyment on this planet and the
realities of it when confronted with authority, power, and control. What is
free time, who gets free time, and for whom is free time for are among the
questions raised in the show.

Multi-channel 3D animations and video installations, paintings, and E-ink
works were made on the job; deal with labor and work conditions; or refer
to incidents of gun violence or historical protests. The scenes and
settings of these work extend from BP gas stations in Bushwick, Brooklyn to
oil fields of Colonial Iran; from rural Walmart stores in the American
mid-west to the gardens of China’s Tiananmen Square; as well as from the
back shelves of art auction houses in Manhattan to luxurious environments
depicted in the advertisements of golf and leisure magazines.

Several paintings, videos, and illuminated installations take their
inspiration and content from activities often consider to be time-wasters.
However, the doodling, playing puzzle games (e.g. Sudoku), diary-keeping,
and other activities reveal lives and situations that are far from
stress-free and set within the contexts of mental health crises, constant
breaking news and other issues of our current times.

Other works in painting, drawing, and installation feature imagery from or
alluding to sports or arts and literature. The imprints of the soles of
Nike Air Force 1s; a portrait of costumed singer in a “Soundie,” (a 1940s
version of music videos); and the face of Angela Davis on a stained, found
T-shirt draw attention to the perceived values and appreciations of these
activities, especially in relationship to socio-economic class, gender, and
race, while often subverting or reclaiming negative or stereotypical
imagery.

Themes of the show subtly surface through the processes and materials used
in the making of the works. A ceramic wall sculpture, resembling natural
elements, takes shape by joining delicately molded sections of previously
unfinished works. The outline of a missing gun is almost completely
contained within a case made of aqua-colored silicone rubber. A delicate
colored lumen photogram of ferns is imprinted onto a scrap of raw steel. An
installation revolves around an old door, outdated technologies, and is
augmented with drawings of components that are missing.

Lastly, a realistically rendered sculpture of a slide projector created
with cardboard and paint considers the technological means humanity has
developed for the recording and preserving of our experiences. And, a
single-channel videos offers a philosophical interrogation of time itself
and its collapse — in which we see life, from birth to death, flash before
us in an instant — and challenges us to consider the possibility no pause
or recess ever exists.

*ALLEN GINSBERG CENTENNIAL*
This summer, Anthology joins forces with the Allen Ginsberg Estate to mark
the centennial of the legendary writer, Beat luminary, counter-cultural
giant, poet-ambassador to the culture at large, and longtime presiding
figure of the East Village. Throughout June, we’ll be presenting screenings
of a wide variety of films that Ginsberg participated in directly, as
actor, narrator, presiding spirit, or inspiration, or that have chronicled
his life and work. The series includesseminal Beat or underground films
such as *PULL MY DAISY* (Robert Frank & Alfred Leslie,1959), *GUNS OF THE
TREES* (Jonas Mekas, 1962), and *WHOLLY COMMUNION* (Peter Whitehead, 1965);
rarely-screened gems like *EMOUNA* (Pamela Mayo, 1973) and *AH!
SUNFLOWER* (Iain
Sinclair & Robert Klinkert, 1967); and a host of documentaries that either
center on Ginsberg in particular or chronicle various dimensions of 20th
century American poetry in general (and which inevitably feature memorable
appearances by Ginsberg). The series will also feature introductions and
discussions with poets, filmmakers, and artists who worked with or
alongside Ginsberg.

Special thanks to Peter Hale (Allen Ginsberg Estate); Costanzo Allione;
Jerry Aronson; Iain Sinclair; Colin Still; Steven Taylor; Anne Waldman;
Lori Bandazian (Netflix); Rebecca Cleman, Karl McCool, and Jooyoung Park
(EAI); Anjelica James (WNET); Marc Mauceri (First Run Features); Benn
Northover; Liz Phillips (Hoover Institution Archives at Stanford
University); and Elena Rossi-Snook (New York Public Library).

*Holos Gramma (Whole Picture) — Holography Exhibition and Expanded Shadow
Puppet Performance with Eric Leiser*
Please join us on Saturday, June 13, 7-10pm for the opening of *Holos
Gramma (Whole Picture)*, an exhibition of new holographic works by visiting
artist Eric Leiser, taking place in XINEMA’s Darkroom. This exhibition is
accompanied by an expanded cinematic shadow puppet performance by Eric
Leiser and XINEMA member Niloufar Samadi, outside XINEMA’s Fieldhouse at
9pm.

Tickets:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/holos-gramma-whole-picture-exhibition-and-performance-tickets-1990370516795
Tickets are $15 suggested donation, NOTAFLOF (no one turned away for lack
of funds).
Outside of the opening hours, the exhibition will be open by appointment
from June 14-20. Please email [email protected] to schedule a viewing.

Holos Gramma—a phrase coined by holography pioneer Dennis Gabor translating
to “the whole picture”—considers how holography captures the immense amount
of information contained within perceived reality. Through a site-specific
installation, Eric Leiser will present new holographic assemblage works
composed of both physical and captured hand-sculpted ceramics that mimic
found and imagined organic forms. Inspired by the intersections of natural
and scientific imagery, these arrangements mirror the hierarchies of the
infinite and interstitial space between real and virtual structures in
holography. Each hologram is composed of a Slavich laser-sensitive
holographic film plate painted with emulsion-staining chemistry, then
encoded with the objects’ three-dimensional information with laser light at
a microscopic level.

To accompany the exhibition, there will be an improvised, collaborative
expanded cinema performance presented outside XINEMA’s Fieldhouse at 9pm on
opening night. The performance will combine live shadow puppetry, lit with
looped 16mm projection and laser illuminated transmission holograms.
Community-made shadow puppets, created in Leiser’s Shadow Puppetry workshop
(
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/shadow-puppetry-workshop-with-eric-leiser-tickets-1990374688272)
will be presented as part of the final performance. This presentation will
activate the surrounding site through collective participation and
ephemeral image-making—highlighting the intersections between holography,
analogue cinema, sculpture, and performance; multiple facets of both Eric’s
practice and broader unconventional cinematic forms.

Due to the limitations of our space, this exhibition is unfortunately not
wheelchair accessible. Accessible public bathrooms are open until 9pm;
afterwards, indoor bathrooms will be available via a short ramp and 29”
doorways. This is a mask recommended event. Masks can be provided free of
charge. If you require further physical accommodation, please email
[email protected].

NYC-based artist Eric Leiser will be present at the exhibition.

REVIVAL RUN – NEW ANTHOLOGY RESTORATION!

Awarded “Best Feature” at both the New York and Chicago Underground Film
Festivals, 2001.

Rarely seen in NYC in the 25 years since its launch at the 2001 edition of
the (dearly missed) New York Underground Film Festival, *CURSE OF THE SEVEN
JACKALS* remains the sole feature by filmmaker Chris Jolly, a veteran
projectionist of the repertory film scene. Shooting with practically no
budget in Athens, Georgia, Jolly cast local non-actors, including the
musician Kevin Barnes (Of Montreal) and artist Jill Carnes, in his singular
minimalist southern low-fi sci-fi “epic”. The film’s (non)action is
hauntingly punctuated with a soundtrack by Laura Carter (ElfPower), Eric
Harris (The Olivia Tremor Control), Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel),
Heather McIntosh (Circulatory System) and Chris Jolly himself – a virtual
“who’s who” of the Athens music scene of the 1990s/early 2000s.

The one and only 16mm print has been housed in Anthology’s collection for
years now, and we’re overjoyed to have finally completed a brand-new
digital restoration. To celebrate this new restoration, and the 25th
anniversary of the film’s NYC debut, we’ll be presenting it in a week-long
revival run alongside a program of Jolly’s (even more unknown but equally
remarkable) short films!

“In this bizarrely minimalist film, synthetic blood test-subject Bernard
(Kevin Barnes) waits in a suburban motel room between injections, trying to
earn enough money to realize his dream of traveling to Egypt.
Unfortunately, the synthetic blood in his veins may cause him to go
insane.”–MUBI

“*CURSE OF THE SEVEN JACKALS* is a film that seemed to come from out of
nowhere. Mostly set in the hotel room that the crew inhabited during the
two-week shoot, *CURSE* tells the story of Bernard, a synthetic blood test
patient who dreams of traveling to Egypt, land of the Pharaohs. Helen, as
played by the sublime non-actress Jill Carnes, is the hotel maid who takes
Bernard out on the town for down-home karaoke and out-of-body bingo
experiences. Like a semi-conscious sci-fi dream as directed by early Andy
Warhol, filmmaker Chris Jolly’s seminal American underground feature was
made with an antiquated Auricon camera that recorded the soundtrack
directly on the film. As disarmingly funny as it is aesthetically
challenging, *CURSE* stands tall as one of the last great 16mm underground
features.” –Andrew Lampert

*BRAKHAGE ON BRAKHAGE*
by Colin Still, 2025, 94 min, digital

Filmmaker Colin Still – who has made numerous films over the years about
artists, musicians, and especially poets (his films on Robert Creeley and
Allen Ginsberg will be shown at Anthology in May and June, in those
writers’ respective centennial film series) – met Stan Brakhage in 1996,
during the filming of his Ginsberg documentary, *NO MORE TO SAY & NOTHING
TO WEEP FOR*. The two quickly formed an affinity, and Brakhage – who was
already in the midst of treatment for the cancer that would take his life
seven years later – agreed to sit for an in-depth series of interviews
(which extended to Still’s later trips to Colorado). The interviews
resulted in more than ten hours of footage, but while some of this material
was made public in an abbreviated form in the late-1990s, it’s only last
year that Still fully completed the film, which has yet to be seen in the
U.S. In its final form, it’s a truly invaluable document of Brakhage.
Clearly recognizing a sympathetic chronicler, and most likely already
sensing his impending mortality, Brakhage speaks freely, thoughtfully, and,
as always, with extraordinary clarity, about everything from his childhood,
cultural coming-of-age, and two marriages, to his (ongoing) development as
a filmmaker and his attitudes towards his own mortality. Along the way he
tells memorable and unfamiliar stories about encounters with a variety of
artists, poets, and filmmakers, speaking sometimes from his home, sometimes
from the local café where – clearly a fixture – he produced many of his
hand-painted films while observing the life of the town around him.

*Whispers of the Solstice Fireflies*
Join us on Summer Solstice for a night of 16mm film, music and video by
Rankin Renwick, Crowey and Arch Cape.

Rankin and Joey from Crowey have wanted to make something together since
they both discovered each other's work. Crowey is releasing their new
album, *Until We Meet Again*, a dreamy ride started during the pandemic,
and worked on through times of great change. It celebrates the glory of
release and the healing it can bring. Rankin Renwick is editing dumpstered
16mm film they were gifted through a phone call from Daniel Menche, who was
working at a Portland Public School at the time, and called Rankin to alert
them about all the films that were getting thrown out. They ended up taking
all of the nature films. The 16mm film projected on this Solstice will be a
collaboration with the cinematic nature of Crowey's album.

Arch Cape is so happy to be playing a dreamy solstice show with the
beautiful amazing Rankin Renwick and Crowey. Arch Cape will be showing two
new video works, performed with accompanied improvised and composed music.
The first video work is about memory, made while at the Sou'Wester Arts
Week Residency. It is called *Time Is A Memory*, with video culled from the
woods and ocean around the Sou'Wester, field recordings from sound walks
around the land there, and recorded interviews with fellow artists about
time and memory. The second piece is being made especially for the
solstice, collaged with videos and stop motion animation she has made over
years, edited to celebrate the longest day of the year, this beautiful
light and the long waxing and waning of it.

Arch Cape is the solo musical/video project of visual artist and musician
Rachel Blumberg. Using various forms of the drum kit, pitched and unpitched
percussion, found sounds, keyboards, electronics, and sometimes voice, Arch
Cape moves between improvised and composed ambient soundscapes and
experimental songs. She often performs live to her stop motion animated and
video collages. The Skyline used to be a Tavern, nestled up in the forest
above The St John's Bridge, right across from Forest Park. But now it is a
secret playhouse with nothing to buy, so BYOB.

Doors Open at 3 for any hikers, bikers and fans that want to come early to
picnic in the field and swing on the weeping birch swing on this longest
day of the year, before the show at 4.

If you so desire, you can hike there through Forest Park. It’s 3.0 miles
from west side of St Johns Bridge up Ridge Trail to Leif Erickson to
Waterline Trail. Also, be aware, it’s 850 feet in Elevation Gain. If you
ride your bike or drive, The Skyline is at 8031 NW Skyline Blvd near NW
Germantown Road. It is NOT Skyline Burger near NW Cornell Road.

*MARE’S NEST*
by Ben Rivers, in English and Catalan with English subtitles., 2025, 98
min, Super-16mm-to-DCP.

U.S. Premiere! A Grasshopper Film release.

“A child emerges from a crashed car and picks up a turtle to whom no less
than the origin of humanity is explained during an extended walk-and-talk
set against a gorgeous sunset. This child is Moon, who wanders a
post-apocalyptic world conspicuously devoid of adults, a mystery the movie
never answers. The latest feature by Ben Rivers deepens the filmmaker’s
longstanding thematic preoccupations (freedom and utopia, alternative
existences and imagined futures), at times recalling earlier works like *SLOW
ACTION* and *AH, LIBERTY!* even as it ventures into new realms of narrative
exploration. Anchored by newcomer Moon Guo Barker’s magnetic performance,
this enigmatic, ever-shifting road movie is also a showcase for Rivers’s
awe-inspiring view of the natural world, inhabited by his charismatic young
actors across a panoply of sequences – some amusing, some unnerving, and in
the case of a stealth Don DeLillo adaptation, both.” –NEW YORK FILM FESTIVAL

“Many scenes are wordless and gestural in nature, yet the artist’s
long-held fascination with language returns, including a remarkable
extended scene adapted from Don DeLillo’s one-act play ‘The Word for Snow’.
Shot in a mix of color and black-and-white Super 16mm, with Rivers’s
typically sterling eye, the images we see are supernal and consistently
imbued with wonderment. An important contribution to work made with
children – Rivers has noted Alanis Obomsawin and Gunvor Nelson as explicit
influences – and a meaningful exploration of the ways in which stories can
be formed and transmitted, *MARE’S NEST* is a film of plants and animals,
of car graveyards and caves, of games and imagination, and, ultimately, a
film of great beauty and mystery.” –Andréa Picard, TIFF

“There is a fragility to [Rivers’s] films – shot on celluloid and
hand-processed – that can make them like handling ancient relics, works
that threaten to break down as you watch. But that perishability accounts
for their extraordinary vitality. With its emphasis on people and places
seemingly existing outside of History, Rivers’s cinema doesn’t just
illuminate alternative lifestyles, but an alternative way of thinking about
the medium and its ability to conjure something Moon and *MARE’S NEST* both
radiate: an inordinate curiosity for the unknown.”–Leonardo Goi, THE FILM
STAGE

*Jordan Belson: Knowledge Beyond Words*
On June 25 and July 9, Lightstruck is honored to present two evenings
devoted to one of cinema’s unparalleled visionaries – Jordan Belson – an
artist and filmmaker whose singular body of work has justifiably been the
subject of devoted contemplation and ecstatic appreciation for over six
decades. Belson’s films defy concrete description, which is part of their
deep and personal appeal, hinting as they do at “a knowledge that is beyond
words”, as Belson once told writer and curator Raymond Foye (to whom we are
greatly indebted for being able to present these programs). While his
earliest films embodied more familiar aspects of mid-century non-objective
visual art, the early 1960s marked a radical shift into intensely mystical
and elusive imagery – achieved largely through Belson’s own remarkable
photographic techniques – to give miraculous form to the innermost regions
of imagination and consciousness.

--- Thursday, June 25, 2026 @ 8:00pm - Jordan Belson: Knowledge Beyond
Words - Program I ---
For our first program, Lightstruck is excited and honored to welcome
independent curator and scholar Raymond Foye in person for an illustrated
talk on Belson and his art, informed in part by their many conversations
over the last five years of Belson’s somewhat secluded life. Belson was a
highly developed artist who explored many methods and mediums of
expression, from drawing and painting, to film, to video, to music,
composing scores for many of his films. In addition to organizing exhibits
of Belson’s paintings and drawings, Foye has been working with the Belson
estate to preserve and restore his films photochemically as well as
digitally. Following the presentation, we are thrilled to project an
exhilarating selection of seven beautiful new 16mm prints, courtesy of the
Belson estate and Raymond Foye.

Following the introductory illustrated lecture, the films screening in this
program are: *Caravan* (1952), *Allures* (1961), *Phenomena* (1965),
*Samadhi* (1967), *World* (1970), *Meditation* (1971), and *Chakra* (1972).

Huge thanks to Raymond Foye and the Jordan Belson estate for providing
newly struck prints from Belson’s internegatives. Notes and program by Zena
Grey and Mark Toscano.

--- Thursday, July 9, 2026 @ 8:00pm - Jordan Belson: Knowledge Beyond Words
- Program II ---
Our second program devoted to the films of Jordan Belson spans his career
up to the early 1970s, with a selection of ever-evolving and -expanding
techniques of singularly mystical expression, most films screening on
recently struck 16mm prints, courtesy of the Belson estate and Raymond
Foye. Inspired by relationships to the worlds of Non-Objective art, jazz,
meditation, and encounters with West Coast artist friends such as Harry
Smith and James Whitney, Belson was consistently exploring and discovering
new methods and mediums of visualization that engage with a level of
consciousness which feels thrilling and otherworldly, yet somehow deeply
familiar. In the late 1950s, through his planetarium “Vortex Concerts” in
collaboration with sound artist Henry Jacobs, Belson amplified his vision
with complex multimedia light shows which helped define the concept of
“expanded cinema” and greatly influenced his filmmaking techniques. In the
late 1960s, he began exploring the medium of video, synthesizing
multilayered contemplations in such films as *Cosmos*. In 1974, Belson
would team up with video artist, musician, and polymediast, Stephen Beck,
to produce one of the ultimate visionary fusions of film and video in
*Cycles*, which will conclude the evening in a glorious 16mm print.

The films screening in this program are: *Bop Scotch* (1952), *Mandala*
 (1952), *Séance* (1959), *Re-Entry* (1964), *Momentum* (1968), *Cosmos*
(1969), *Light* (1973), *Union* (1975, by Stephen Beck), and *Cycles* (1974,
by Jordan Belson & Stephen Beck).

Huge thanks to Raymond Foye and the Jordan Belson estate for providing
newly struck prints from Belson’s internegatives. Additional thanks to
Stephen Beck and Electronic Arts Intermix for providing Union. Notes and
program by Zena Grey and Mark Toscano.

*KAJILLIONAIRE*, (2020) Directed by Miranda July
>From acclaimed writer/director Miranda July comes a profoundly moving and
wildly original comedy.

Con-artists Theresa (Debra Winger) and Robert (Richard Jenkins) have spent
26 years training their only daughter, Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood), to
swindle, scam, and steal at every opportunity. During a desperate, hastily
conceived heist, they charm a stranger (Gina Rodriguez) into joining their
next scam, only to have their entire world turned upside down.

Preceded by:
*ATLANTA*, (1996) Directed by Miranda July
A 12-year-old Olympic swimmer and her mother (both played by July) speak to
the public about going for the gold.

“As the film progresses through subtle editing-in-reverse, July reveals the
world around the televised facade. ... The 23-year-old performer
convincingly plays both Dawn Schnavel and her mom, or rather, vanishes into
them. What’s noticeable isn’t so much the ease with which July transforms
herself into a pre-teen girl and an older woman but the similarities and
differences between the daughter and the mother July becomes.”

*EC: THE ART OF VISION*
by Stan Brakhage, 1961-65, 261 min, 16mm, silent

“Includes the complete *DOG STAR MAN* and a full extension of the
singularly visible themes of it. Inspired by that period of music in which
the word ‘symphonia’ was created and by the thought that the term, as then,
was created to name the overlap and enmeshing of suites, this film presents
the visual symphony that *DOG STAR MAN* can be seen as and also all the
suites of which it is composed. But as it is a film, and a work of music,
the above suggests only one of the possible approaches to it. For instance,
as ‘cinematographer,’ at source, means ‘writer of movement,’ certain poetic
analogies might serve as well. The form is conditioned by the works of art
which have inspired *DOG STAR MAN*, its growth of form by the physiology
and experiences (including experiences of art) of the man who made it.
Finally, it must be seen for what it is.” –Stan Brakhage
