*Overexposed: Art, Technology, and the Body*
The advent of cinema in the late 19th century allowed artists and
scientists to record motion for the first time. Developed concurrently,
X-ray technology extended vision beneath the skin, allowing people to view
the body’s interior. Together, these tools produced spectacular new images
that shaped modern conceptions of the body.

Overexposed: Art, Technology, and the Body brings together research-based
and educational films with contemporary artworks by 16 American and
international artists to examine the historical, medical, and
sociopolitical implications of seeing inside the body. The works on view
were created between 1891 and 2025.

*** Works included by Panteha Abareshi, Peggy Ahwesh, Zuza Banasińska,
Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel, Theo Cuthand and Ruth Cuthand,
Anna Kipervaser, Liz Magic Laser, Barbara Hammer, Ana Mendieta, Donald
Rodney, Courtney Stephens, Agnes Questionmark, and Leslie Thornton and Ron
Vawter. ***

The show is organized into three overlapping sections. “Technology and
Power” explores how film and X-ray technologies shaped Western claims to
scientific objectivity. “Limits of the Gaze” features artists who engage
with archives and found footage, and investigate their own bodies to expose
and challenge the normative assumptions embedded in medical images. “Care
and Control” examines how imaging tools have transformed practices of care.
Overexposed invites visitors to reflect on how visualizing the inside of
the body shapes medical knowledge and human experience.

Organized by Sonia Epstein, Curator of Science & Technology

Lead support for Overexposed  was provided by the Alfred P. Sloan
Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Additional
generous support was provided by Romy Cohen, The Gladys Krieble Delmas
Foundation, Elaine Goldman, May & Samuel Rudin Family Foundation, and Doug
Pugh.

*EXPERIMENTAL WESTERNS, PART 1: AVANT-GARDE WESTERNS*
Throughout this summer Anthology will be exploring the (for better and for
worse) quintessentially American genre of the Western. Once ubiquitous in
U.S. culture, adopted and adapted by cinemas throughout the world (most
famously in Italy but in reality throughout almost every corner of the
globe), left for dead towards the end of the 20th century, but stubbornly
and perpetually revived, revised, coopted, and critiqued, the Western has
proven uniquely resonant, astonishingly elastic, and profoundly productive
for filmmakers and artists of many different stylistic sensibilities and
political persuasions.

As Anthology’s (cracked-mirror) contribution to this year’s widespread
cultural reckoning with the nation’s Semiquincentennial, Anthology has
organized a two-part series devoted to the remotest frontiers (so-to-speak)
of experimentation and revisionism that have taken place within the Western
genre over the decades. The first part of the series – taking place
throughout July – focuses on those relatively rare but fascinating
instances in which genuinely avant-garde filmmakers have engaged with the
genre: countercultural parodies or subversions like *GREASER’S PALACE*,
Adolfas Mekas’s *THE DOUBLE-BARRELLED DETECTIVE STORY*, Warhol’s *HORSE*
and *LONESOME COWBOYS*, or the last section of Bruce Baillie’s *QUICK
BILLY*; found-footage works such as Raphael Montañez Ortiz’s *COWBOY AND
“INDIAN” FILM*, Peter Tscherkassky’s *INSTRUCTIONS FOR A LIGHT AND SOUND
MACHINE*, Holly Fisher’s *BULLETS FOR BREAKFAST*, or Craig Baldwin’s *WILD
GUNMAN*; and films that evoke the genre by focusing on the landscapes or
figures of the West, including Kevin Jerome Everson’s *TEN FIVE IN THE
GRASS*, James Benning’s *DESERET* and *UTOPIA*, and Matthew Barney’s *CREMASTER
2*.

This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

*Film Screening with Rich Fedorchak*
Part of an occasional art film screening hosted by AVA member Rick
Fedorchak. Films selected for the July 28 include short experimental films
by Rich and a film by the musician and composer Reagan Padula who will
perform a live piece of music to accompany her film. Rich Fedorchak is a
retired RN who has had an art practice in collage, assemblage and
experimental film since the mid-1970's. He has been a longtime AVA
exhibiting artist and volunteer. His films have been selected for screening
at numerous film festivals devoted to experimental film in the US, Canada,
and Italy. Reagan Padula is a composer, instrumentalist and sound organizer
whose ears are moving as microphone and speaker. Right now she is
investigating sympathetic resonance sonic- collage and the disruption of
memory-time, body-space, self-other. She feels fulfillment from creating
and studying queer art spaces in the underground and how they heal
communities. For the past 2 years she has been the Post-Baccalaureate Intern
and teaching assistant in the masters program in Sonic Practice at
Dartmouth College.

*Al carajo con Hollywood*
In their manifesto “Enough with Yankee Imperialist Documentaries!”, the
Cine-Aztlán collective declared: “La Raza is fed up with the demeaning
lies, slanders, and racial stereotypes that the bourgeois film barons have
tried to embed in the minds of the rest of the world regarding us.” This
program contrasts Hollywood’s distortions of Mexico and Mexican-American
communities with the sharp, categorical rejection that Chicanx cinema has
articulated in response to those stereotypical representations.

estereotipadas.

*"Pintura y Arte" part of "Aztlán. Túnel del tiempo"*
The dialogue between Chicano film and painting, theater, and performance is
a rich, dynamic, and lasting one. David Alfaro Siqueiros's censored murals
in Los Angeles, painted in 1932, have been a point of reference for
generations of Chicanos interested in public art. The pioneering
documentarian Jesús Salvador Treviño chronicles this historical context of
the murals' production, the controversy that they provoked, and their
restoration and legacy. After meeting as students at Garfield High School,
and at protests against the US war in Viet Nam, the artists' collective
Asco organized performances, photo shoots, murals, and film and video
productions that rejected easy categorization. Inspired by the emergent
"New American Cinema," and especially by the films of Stan Brakhage, the
late El Paso-based Willie Varela developed a unique cinematic language of
gestures and fleeting glimpses, seen here in two of his super-8 shorts.

*"The Past is a Foreign Country," part of "Aztlán, Túnel del tiempo"*
Taking its title from David Lowenthal's landmark work of historiography,
this program looks at episodes of Chicano history as treated in film and
television. From a reconstruction of a moment in the Mexican Revolution,
displaced onto the streets of today's Los Angeles, to experimental films
and documentaries, this program addresses key moments of Chicano history
and the ways in which these are represented. Curated by Jesse Lerner.

*MARCEL DUCHAMP ON FILM*
By some accounts, the great Dada artist Marcel Duchamp created only a
single film: *ANÉMIC CINÉMA* (1926), a short experimental work that
alternates between vertiginous rotating spirals and erotically charged
typographical text. This contention is highly misleading, however, since
Duchamp in fact created several moving-image works over the course of his
career, including the (now-lost) collaboration with Man Ray, *ELSA,
BARONESS VON FREYTAG-LORINGHOVEN, SHAVING HER PUBIC HAIR* (1921), and a
collaboration with John Cage called *DISCS* (1947). Additionally, Duchamp
drafted numerous ideas for films that were never actually realized, such as *TO
INFINITY*, which involves projecting a film on a balloon that slowly
inflates until the “screen” finally bursts.

Furthermore, Duchamp’s relationship to cinema is not exhausted by analyzing
the films he made (or conceived of making) – he also appears as a performer
in numerous experimental films by artists like René Clair, Maya Deren, and
Andy Warhol. And this is not to mention the dozens of films that have been
inspired by Duchamp’s oeuvre, including films by Joseph Cornell, Hannah
Wilke, and Hollis Frampton. As the found footage filmmaker Peter
Tscherkassky put it, “We all stand on the shoulders of giants, and in the
case of Marcel Duchamp, on very broad shoulders!”

This series is presented on the occasion of the Museum of Modern Art’s
exhibition, “Marcel Duchamp” (on view through August 22), and has been
co-curated by Jed Rapfogel and Justin Remes. Remes is the author of “Found
Footage Films: A Work of Experimental Scholarship,” “Absence in Cinema: The
Art of Showing Nothing,” and “Motion(less) Pictures: The Cinema of Stasis.”
Remes is currently working on a book project about Duchamp’s relationship
to the cinema.

*"Indigenous Experiments," part of "Aztlán. Túnel del tiempo"*
While some historians take the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the
resultant creation of a irredentist population of Mexican descent as the
origin of the Chicano community, the relations between Mexico's Central
Valley and what is now the Southwest of the United States can be traced
back centuries before the European conquest. With short films by Yolanda
Cruz, Rancho Shampoo, John Jota Leaños, Lourdes Portillo, and others.
Curated by Jesse Lerner.

*"We Didn't Cross the Border, The Border Crossed Us" part of "Aztlán. Túnel
del tiempo"*
Artists have taken the US-Mexican border as a fraught arena for public art
production. From 1984 to the beginning of this century, the Border Arts
Workshop/Taller de Arte Fronterizo pioneered a public-facing program of
performance and exhibitions that centered on the international line. This
program surveys some of the expressions of this border cinema, from a
documentary on a Poblano community divided by the border to historical
representations of binational families, marked by intergenerational
tensions, systematic racism, and uncertain futures. With films by Ana
Marchado, Alex Rivera, and others. Curated by Jesse Lerner.

Luis Buñuel & Salvador Dalí *UN CHIEN ANDALOU* (1928, 22 min, 35mm, b&w)
Twenty-two minutes of pure, scandalous dream-imagery, a stream of images
from which anything that could be given a rational meaning was rigorously
excluded. It remains the unsurpassed masterpiece of the surrealist cinema.

Luis Buñuel *LAND WITHOUT BREAD / LAS HURDES: TIERRA SIN PAN* (1932, 28

“A documentary describing, matter-of-factly, a region of Spain so ravaged
by epidemic poverty that there our worst fantasies find their objective
correlative.” –Raymond Durgnat

*EC: LOS OLVIDADOS*
(aka *THE FORGOTTEN ONES / THE YOUNG AND THE DAMNED*)
by Luis Buñuel, in Spanish with English subtitles, 1950, 88 min, 35mm

Fusing social realist and surrealistic elements, Buñuel’s film
unflinchingly portrays the lives of a gang of juvenile delinquents on the
destitute streets of Mexico City, led by the ruthless Jaibo (Roberto Cobo).
Edging against neorealism but devoid of its sentimentalism, Buñuel zeroes
in on the brutalities of life lived in poverty without any undercurrent of
redemption. In 1951, Octavio Paz wrote of the film, “The world of *LOS
OLVIDADOS* is peopled by orphans, by loners who seek communion…the quest
for the ‘other,’ for our likeness, equals, is the other side of the search
for the mother. Or the acceptance of her definitive absence, that knowledge
that we are alone.” *LOS OLVIDADOS* was among Barbara Loden’s favorite
films.

*A. Rimbaud*
by Patrick Wang, 2026, 175 minutes

The improbable life of French poet Arthur Rimbaud unfolds with all the
shock and playfulness of his poetry. “I say one must be a seer, make
oneself a seer. The Poet makes himself a seer by a long, gigantic and
rational derangement of all the senses. All forms of love, of suffering, of
madness; he searches himself, he exhausts within himself all the poisons,
keeping only their quintessences.” So wrote the teenaged Arthur Rimbaud,
that visionary enfant terrible of 19th-century French poetry, on his quest
“to find a language” for what proved an enduringly outsized creative
ambition. You can imagine the temptation, and the peril, of trying to
express this cinematically. Perhaps with a not-famous actor alone in a
black box for nearly three hours?

Of Patrick Wang’s very experimental biopic, starring Blake Draper, critic
Jonathan Rosenbaum writes, “A. Rimbaud has been touring this country slowly
and unpredictably, picking up fans and momentum en route. Once again, like
his previous masterpiece, it was turned down by every film festival it was
submitted to, in effect punished for its uniqueness.” Siddhant Adlakha’s
Variety review meanwhile notes “the kind of maverick indie spirit that
demands a complete re-orientation of audiovisual language in a way few
modern experimentalists would attempt with traditional technology.”
