*Overexposed: Art, Technology, and the Body*
The advent of cinema in the late 19th century allowed artists and
scientists to record motion for the first time. Developed concurrently,
X-ray technology extended vision beneath the skin, allowing people to view
the body’s interior. Together, these tools produced spectacular new images
that shaped modern conceptions of the body.

Overexposed: Art, Technology, and the Body brings together research-based
and educational films with contemporary artworks by 16 American and
international artists to examine the historical, medical, and
sociopolitical implications of seeing inside the body. The works on view
were created between 1891 and 2025.

*** Works included by Panteha Abareshi, Peggy Ahwesh, Zuza Banasińska,
Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel, Theo Cuthand and Ruth Cuthand,
Anna Kipervaser, Liz Magic Laser, Barbara Hammer, Ana Mendieta, Donald
Rodney, Courtney Stephens, Agnes Questionmark, and Leslie Thornton and Ron
Vawter. ***

The show is organized into three overlapping sections. “Technology and
Power” explores how film and X-ray technologies shaped Western claims to
scientific objectivity. “Limits of the Gaze” features artists who engage
with archives and found footage, and investigate their own bodies to expose
and challenge the normative assumptions embedded in medical images. “Care
and Control” examines how imaging tools have transformed practices of care.
Overexposed invites visitors to reflect on how visualizing the inside of
the body shapes medical knowledge and human experience.

Organized by Sonia Epstein, Curator of Science & Technology

Lead support for Overexposed  was provided by the Alfred P. Sloan
Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Additional
generous support was provided by Romy Cohen, The Gladys Krieble Delmas
Foundation, Elaine Goldman, May & Samuel Rudin Family Foundation, and Doug
Pugh.

*Long Live the Underground!*
Celebrating Six Decades of the Film-Makers’ Cooperative and Millennium Film
Workshop

Stan Brakhage’s 1958 silent film *Anticipation of the Night* is a kinetic
study in rhythm and color, with images that evoke the passage from
childhood innocence to adult angst. Now considered a milestone of the
American avant-garde, it was initially rejected for screening in New York
because of its seemingly formless approach. The need for distributors and
exhibitors who were open to the burgeoning underground film
movement—decidedly non-commercial, ultra-low-budget projects that were
radical in style and content and often shot on 16mm and 8mm film—led
directly to the creation of the Film-Makers’ Cooperative in 1961 and
Millennium Film Workshop in 1966. Both organizations, so crucial to the
growth of the underground in the 1960s, are thriving today, and continue to
introduce new filmmakers while honoring cinema’s rich history of personal
expression.

A disparate group of filmmakers who called themselves the New American
Cinema Group, led by Jonas Mekas, Shirley Clarke, Gregory Markoupoulos, and
others, formed the Film-Makers’ Cooperative to distribute the work of any
artist who chose to deposit their films. Its spirit was captured in a
manifesto by Mekas: “We believe that cinema is indivisibly a personal
expression…. We don’t want false, polished, slick films—we prefer them
rough, unpolished, but alive; we don’t want rosy films—we want them the
color of blood.” Five years later, Millennium Film Workshop was formed, led
by Ken Jacobs, who chose the name to convey what he called “an atmosphere
of possibility,” a future where “people could do their own thing.”
Originally based at the St. Mark’s Church, Millennium soon set up shop on
the Lower East Side, offering equipment access, work space for
post-production, and weekly screenings in its ongoing Personal Cinema
series.

Established during a galvanizing cultural moment amid deep social unrest
and change, The Film-Makers’ Cooperative and Millennium Film Workshop
maintain their missions today against the currents of our own turbulent
era, as vital and necessary as ever. This series reflects that continuity
by celebrating just some of the thousands of filmmakers whose work they
have fostered, distributed, and screened. Selections will be presented in
nine thematic programs: *Anticipation of the (Opening) Night*; *Roots of
the NY Underground*; *Make Love, Not War*; *Seventies Structures*; *Cinemas
of Transgression*; *Quotidian Pleasures*; *New York No Story*; *Diaries,
Notes, and Sketches*; and *The Material Is the Message*.

Organized by Joe Wakeman, Executive Director, Millennium Film Workshop,
Matt McKinzie, Artistic Director, the Film-Makers’ Cooperative, and David
Schwartz, President of the Board of Directors, the Film-Makers’
Cooperative, with Ron Magliozzi, Curator, and Carson Parish, Associate
Producer, Department of Film, MoMA, and Julia Curl, Marron Research
Consortium Fellow, MoMA. Thanks to Steve Macfarlane, Department Assistant,
Department of Film, MoMA.

*INCREDIBLY STRANGE MUSIC*
Here's an aggressive critical engagement with both old and new
pop-rhetorical tropes, led by legendary beatnik re-mixer 99 Hooker! His
much-anticipated appearance here promises both wise and wise-guy versions
of the comtempo sub-pop-music scene, as well as genius patter in situ.
Avatar Pit, his real-time media delirium, is supported fore and aft by a
raft of utterly anomalous musical singularities---spontaneous musique
concrete sessions, damaged polka fragments, Troloman, Babalu, the Blob, the
Residents, Eric Burden and the Animals, Chrissie Hynde and the
Pretenders...rockin hard! AND Liberace, Spike Jones, the Mirror Man, Louis
Prima & Keely Smith, singing ostriches, and so many Other outsiders, now
centerstage in 99's upside-down musical universe!!

*Vital Signs Film Series presents The Currents + By the River*
Vital Signs is a monthly film series organized by Bay Area filmmaker and
curator Jonathan Kiefer to showcase new and recently-released,
feature-length, contemporary, independent and artist-made films that have
shown around the international film festival circuit but may or may not
have been picked up by distributors and are otherwise hard to find. Films
may feature obscure themes, unusual perspectives or eccentric material, but
they have all been sifted through the Vital Signs filter so you can be sure
they are all films worth leaving your home to see in community with
like-minded art film/film art appreciators. Screenings will take place at
Shapeshifters every first Sunday at 2pm unless otherwise noted.

Join us for First Sunday Brunch! Our café is open 11am-2pm for brunch on
first Sundays before every Vital Signs matinée film. Check our Instagram

Alternative Visions — Program 5
Introduction: Mark Minch-de Leon
Presented in Association with SF Cinematheque

Founded in 2018 by Sky Hopinka, Adam Khalil, Alexandra Lazarowich and Adam
Piron, COUSIN was created to support Indigenous artists expanding
traditional definitions of, and experimenting with with, moving image form
and genre. This program offers a selection of works made by COUSIN
collective artists, including Hopinka's 2017 consideration of the Dakota
Access Pipeline protest and Lindsay McIntyre's film about caribou and
lichen—made using those materials in the photographic process. A short film
by Lebanese artist Christophe Katrib reflects on the dissonance he
experiences living on the stolen land of the United States as “US-backed
Israel commits genocide and ethnic cleansing on Palestine and my homeland
of Lebanon.”

This fall BAMPFA's long-running annual series of historical and
contemporary experimental film includes the work of dozens of artists
across ten programs, beginning with a program of cinematic investigations
into automation and AI with Gibbs Chapman in person. The series continues
into November with a program of films made by members of the Oakland-based
Black Hole Collective Film Lab. Brydie O'Connor is in person with her
archival portrait of queer experimental film pioneer Barbara Hammer. The
late Marjorie Keller's intimate 16mm films have a rare screening to mark
the publication of a new book about her work. Artist Naeem Mohaiemen
presents and discusses *A Missing Can of Film*(2025) in conjunction with
BAM's exhibition Private Frontiers. A selection of works made by COUSIN
collective artists, including Sky Hopinka's 2017 consideration of the

Christian Flemm is an independent filmmaker, curator, film restorer, and
lab technician based in Berlin. Working primarily with 16mm film without
digital intermediaries, he practices what he calls "Medium Intimacy," a
devotional approach to the moving image that opposes the acceleration and
disembodiment of the digital age. Through small-scale, handcrafted works,
generally projected in domestic settings, Flemm highlights the tactile,
temporal, and relational properties of cinema, suggesting that it can be a
place of genuine encounter rather than simply an object of remote
consumption. His works on paper are published by Eckstein in Berlin (EU)
and by Grotesk Press (USA).

*GISES (2026) & WHEN THE SUN IS EATEN (2025) Film Screening & Talk with
Kevin Jerome Everson*
Introduction by Media City Film Festival.
Film screening curated by MCFF Artistic Director Oona Mosna.
Conversation between Kevin Jerome Everson and Yasmina Price.
Partners: Warren Astronomical Society & NOVA24 Photo + Film Festival.

Media City Film Festival and Trinosophes Projects, in cooperation with the
Detroit Public Library, present a special in-person event with director
Kevin Jerome Everson, celebrating a new celestial artwork commissioned by
MCFF with support from the Knight Arts Foundation. This screening is
curated by Media City Film Festival Artistic Director Oona Mosna.

Globally recognized for his prolific body of work featuring over 300 films,
Kevin Jerome Everson has developed a distinctive moving-image practice
attentive to labor, gesture, duration, and the textures of everyday life.
*Gises* (2026) is Everson's newest celestial film, shot from the unique
vantage point of metro Detroit, and is the ninth work in his ongoing body
of films devoted to celestial phenomena. Created at the Stargate
Observatory in southeastern Michigan with generous assistance from the
Warren Astronomical Society, this new film extends Everson's decade-long
engagement with all things superlunary: the sun, the moon, eclipses, and
other stellar phenomena.

Working with Super 8 and 16mm Bolex cameras fastened to Stargate's
Kalinowski-Khula telescope, Everson observes the heavens through the
material and optical possibilities of photochemical film, tracing the sun's
movement through changing registers of light, duration, and perception. The
title *Gises* comes from the Potawatomi language, referring to the sun but
also encompassing the moon and seasonal changes tracked through celestial
cycles that have guided traditional harvesting and life in this region for
millennia.

Also screening as part of this engagement is Everson's *When the Sun Is
Eaten (Chi'bal K'iin)*(2025), which takes its title from a Mayan expression
for the solar eclipse, and captures 100% totality across three time
zones—Mazatlán, Mexico; Carbondale, Ill.; and Cleveland, Ohio—during the
April 8, 2024 solar eclipse. This pairing of films extends a conception of
the sun and moon not as distant objects of observation but as presences
intimately bound to the measurement of time and human ways of understanding
the world. Both films are scored by Virginia-based composer David
Dominique, recipient of a 2026 Creative Capital State of the Art Prize. The
event is followed by a discussion with the artist and visiting film scholar
Yasmina Price.

Kevin Jerome Everson's visit to Detroit is made possible by many funders
and partners, including Media City Film Festival, Trinosophes Projects, the
Knight Arts Foundation, the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, the Film
Studies Program at Michigan State University, Warren Astronomical Society,
Abrams Planetarium, Detroit Public Library, and NOVA24 Photo + Film
Festival. *Gises* (2026) is a production of trilobite-arts DAC and Picture
Palace Pictures. All films appear courtesy of the artist, trilobite-arts
DAC, and Picture Palace Pictures.

*STARSHINE & CLAY The Films of Kevin Jerome Everson at Abrams Planetarium*
Introduction from Media City Film Festival and Broad Underground, followed
by a conversation between filmmaker Kevin Jerome Everson and film scholar
Yasmina Price.

Media City Film Festival (MCFF), Trinosophes Projects, and the Broad
Underground Film Series at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum and the Film
Studies Program at Michigan State University present Starshine & Clay: The
Films of Kevin Jerome Everson at Abrams Planetarium. This screening is
curated by Media City Film Festival Artistic Director Oona Mosna.

Starshine & Clay features ten films by celebrated African American artist
and filmmaker Kevin Jerome Everson, exploring the space where the celestial
meets the earthly, the cosmic meets the bodily, and the everyday meets the
miraculous. This program maps the astonishing scale between solar totality
and the intimate worlds of human experience, bringing together two of
Everson's early celestial films, *Polly One* (2018) and *Condor* (2019),
with works that traverse sonic and spiritual worlds, acts of illusion,
vernacular knowledge, rituals of performance, aging, care, and the
inevitability of death. Throughout, Everson's cinema finds the
extraordinary not by leaving the everyday behind but by attending to it
with precision, returning to ordinary objects and experiences as sites of
possibility. A gesture becomes choreography, ritual becomes apparition, and
voices become living archives. Starshine & Clay evokes a continual movement
between worlds, asking us to look upward, outward, and again at what is
immediately present to consider what might become visible when the familiar
is seen in its place among the stars.

Kevin Jerome Everson will be in attendance to celebrate the completion of
*Gises* (2026), a new celestial film created in the metro Detroit region,
commissioned by Media City Film Festival with support from the Knight Arts
Foundation. *Gises* is having its limited world premiere as an installation
at the Detroit Public Library's Main Branch in the Clara Stanton Jones
Friends Auditorium (October 15–November 14). Everson's events in the region
unite many partners, including the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, the
Film Studies Program at Michigan State University, Warren Astronomical
Society, Abrams Planetarium, Detroit Public Library, NOVA24 Photo + Film
Festival, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Ontario Arts Council.

Pictures. All films appear courtesy of the artist, trilobite-arts DAC, and

“This short documentary of a young African American woman is made of two
parts:—the titular doctor's visit, and the woman's oral history interwoven
together in image and sound. This clean portraiture offers a lucid approach
to an idea of considerable force. Everson both stretches and collapses the
distance between the human body as a site for perception and the body as a
physical thing that can be damaged.” –Daniel Kasman
