Developed concurrently, X-ray technology extended vision beneath the skin, allowing people to view the body’s interior. Together, these tools produced spectacular new images that shaped modern conceptions of the body. Overexposed: Art, Technology, and the Body brings together research-based and educational films with contemporary artworks by 16 American and international artists to examine the historical, medical, and sociopolitical implications of seeing inside the body. The works on view were created between 1891 and 2025. *** Works included by Panteha Abareshi, Peggy Ahwesh, Zuza Banasińska, Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel, Theo Cuthand and Ruth Cuthand, Anna Kipervaser, Liz Magic Laser, Barbara Hammer, Ana Mendieta, Donald Rodney, Courtney Stephens, Agnes Questionmark, and Leslie Thornton and Ron Vawter. *** The show is organized into three overlapping sections. “Technology and Power” explores how film and X-ray technologies shaped Western claims to scientific objectivity. “Limits of the Gaze” features artists who engage with archives and found footage, and investigate their own bodies to expose and challenge the normative assumptions embedded in medical images. “Care and Control” examines how imaging tools have transformed practices of care. Overexposed invites visitors to reflect on how visualizing the inside of the body shapes medical knowledge and human experience. Organized by Sonia Epstein, Curator of Science & Technology Lead support for Overexposed was provided by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Additional generous support was provided by Romy Cohen, The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, Elaine Goldman, May & Samuel Rudin Family Foundation, and Doug Pugh. *SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2026* Venue type: *Live, physical event* Rubicon Cinema <https://us.list-manage.com/UwMw6FdGOIO?e=857b71a9cb&c2id=0d67e0aba7fa6a8c62b4e960fe7a49fe> 8pm ET, Rubicon Cinema at the Blue Sky Studio, 943 Dopler Street, Akron OH 44303 *An Evening with Filmmaker Lewis Klahr* Admission: Free (suggested $10 donation) BYO beverages and snacks Rubicon Cinema is thrilled to welcome Los Angeles filmmaker Lewis Klahr for the opening of our 10th season! Known for his mesmerizing collage films, Klahr transforms cutouts from mid-century magazines, comic books, catalogs, and photographs into dreamlike worlds of memory, desire, loss, and nostalgia. His films have been presented at the Whitney Biennial, MoMA, the Wexner Center for the Arts, and festivals around the world, and are held in the collections of MoMA and Colección Inelcom. Join us Friday, October 10 for a special screening of Klahr’s work, followed by a conversation with the filmmaker himself. Come experience these strange, beautiful fragments of American pop culture—and stay afterward to hear directly from the artist about his work and process. Program: *The Blue Rose of Forgetfulness*, 2022, color, sound, 63:30 min a handmade collage melodrama built from animated cutouts of mid-century magazines, books, comics, and other printed ephemera. In Klahr's hands, these obsolete commercial images become vehicles for dreams of love, desire, memory, and loss. *Nimbus Smile*, 2009, color, sound, 8 min *Nimbus Seeds*, 2009, color, sound, 8 min *Cumulonimbus*, 2010, color, sound, 9:17 min “In this grouping of three related videos on the subject of romantic triangles, Klahr expands his explorations of memory, love, repetition, narrative, and loss in surprising new ways until the films build into complex emotional and artistic experiences. His approach to inter-film montage (the interconnected relationship of different films to each other) reaches its fullest expression with these works.” – Wexner Center for the Arts About Rubicon Since 2015, Rubicon Cinema has been a nonprofit monthly event in Highland Square, Akron, OH, showcasing a curated selection of contemporary cinema from September through May. Each screening invites audiences into a deeper dialogue with the work, often enhanced by visiting artists, Q&A sessions, and thoughtful discussions that make Rubicon a distinct part of the region’s cultural landscape. ___________________________________________________________________ Venue type: *Live, physical event* Spectacle <https://us.list-manage.com/11i0LxHldsY?e=857b71a9cb&c2id=0d67e0aba7fa6a8c62b4e960fe7a49fe> 7:30pm ET, Spectacle, 124 South 3rd Street, Brooklyn, NY, between Bedford Avenue and Berry Street *NO NAME IN NEW YORK* Dirs. Justin Clifford Rhody & Abigail Smith, 2021-2026. US. 66 min. This film contains flashing lights and strobe effects that may affect viewers with photosensitive epilepsy. >From 2021-2026, Justin Clifford Rhody and Abigail Smith operated the now-defunct No Name Cinema in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Now, the duo of self-taught filmmakers is on tour across the East Coast, sharing a couple of the frantic, beautiful, frightful, and inventive films they made while running the aforementioned anti-capitalist warehouse microcinema. The 65-minute program assembled this evening comprises a wide-range of artist films, from re-re-visionist westerns to strobe-fueled tone poems made with film stock and copy machines. Similar thematic, aesthetic, and formal interests abound across all of the works presented this evening. Key among these are the filmmakers’ attentive approach to the role sound plays in a film, the recurrence of collaborative filmmaking, and a continued investigation into the material qualities of film (its deterioration, mechanics, and texture). In much the same manner Rhody and Smith championed radical artist films via No Name Cinema, their own work also reflects a devotion to stressing the formal and material limits of their medium-of-choice. Each film in this program was made on its own terms, and together they represent a repudiation of what film is often limited to and a proposition of what it could be. Justin Clifford Rhody and Abigail Smith will be in attendance to introduce this special screening. *THE INTERIOR FRONTIER*, dir. Originally shot on 16mm in the 1980s by Sherwin while traveling within the Irish landscape and reflecting on structure, presence, and place, the film remained unseen for over three decades and was lovingly restored by EYE Institute Amsterdam. “Time is experienced through the film in a number of ways: traces of past human activity, static shots of long duration, the same places revisited in different conditions of weather and light, exact print repeats of some of the shots, exact repeats of ambient sounds (set against different images), an overall symmetrical shape to the film. I was also interested to discover what kind of aural and visual spaces the mind would create from the juxtaposition of conflicting stimuli.” – Guy Sherwin *Messages*, 35 mins, b&w, silent 16mm, 1984, Guy Sherwin *Conversations 2*, 15mins, colour sound DV, 2026, Lynn Loo *Connemara*, 30 mins, colour sound 16mm, 1980, Guy Sherwin This event is free but booking is essential. Book here. Lynn Loo is originally from Singapore and currently living in London. She taught music before making her first film in 1997. The influence of a poetic approach to experimental film began in Chicago at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. On moving to London she learned a different, more tactile, film culture taking place in Europe. Her work looks into the possibility of sculpting time and space through the language of moving-image and the diversity of technology. It includes single-screen films, multiple-projection performances, and installations in super 8, 16mm, and video. Guy Sherwin studied painting at Chelsea School of Art before joining the London Film-Makers’ Cooperative in the early 1970s, where he learned the processes of film. The rigours of a material based approach opened up all aspects of film making and exhibition as potential for exploration. The various threads of his practice originated there: silent one-roll camera films; sounds made from camera images or by hand; playing with the material of the screen and the space of performance. His collaboration with Lynn Loo has extended this approach into multi-projection and digital forms. ___________________________________________________________________ Venue type: *Live, physical event* Cafe OTO <https://us.list-manage.com/wFEgSP7aFsq?e=857b71a9cb&c2id=0d67e0aba7fa6a8c62b4e960fe7a49fe> 7:30pm GMT+1, Cafe OTO, 18–22 Ashwin street, Dalston, London, E8 3DL, England, UK *Sonic Cinema: Tony Conrad’s Loose Connection + Billy Steiger* Sonic Cinema presents a rare screening of Tony Conrad’s audiovisual experiment *Loose Connection* (1973/2011) preceded by a live solo performance by violinist Billy Steiger. Shot in 1973 and revisited in 2011, *Loose Connection* is an experimental documentary of family life in Midtown Manhattan, where Tony Conrad lived with Beverly Grant and their son Ted. Taking a self-built rotating camera around his locale of West 42nd Street, Conrad interrupts the viewer's spatial orientation with fragmentary, flickering images, anchored by the staccato noise of the street. Though it shares a formal lineage with Conrad's earlier films such as *The Flicker* (1966), as well as Michael Snow's mechanical experiments, the documentary elements of *Loose Connection* give it unexpected warmth. Conrad’s openness about the production process and conversations with curious passersby lend the film a personality akin to the home movie as much as structural filmmaking, pushing the film beyond the austere formalism typically associated with the tradition. Perhaps best known for his stroboscopic film *The Flicker* and his music with the Theatre of Eternal Music, also known as the Dream Syndicate, and German experimental rock band Faust, Tony Conrad (1940–2016) pioneered work with visual phenomena and sustained tone that helped shape decades of experimental film and music that followed. Moving just as freely between film & video, music, sculpture, and public access television, his multidisciplinary practice resists easy categorisation, often challenging the modes of production and relationships of power embedded within media forms. Please note: due to the flashing images in this film, it may not be suitable for people with epilepsy or other light sensitivity conditions. Created at the Stargate Observatory in southeastern Michigan with generous assistance from the Warren Astronomical Society, this new film extends Everson’s decade-long engagement with all things superlunary: the sun, the moon, eclipses, and other stellar phenomena. Working with Super 8 and 16mm Bolex cameras fastened to Stargate’s Kalinowski-Khula telescope, Everson observes the heavens through the material and optical possibilities of photochemical film, tracing the sun’s movement through changing registers of light, duration, and perception. The title *Gises* comes from the Potawatomi language, referring to the sun but also encompassing the moon and seasonal changes tracked through celestial cycles that have guided traditional harvesting and life in this region for millennia. This project is made possible by many funders and partners, including the Knight Arts Foundation, Detroit Public Library, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Ontario Arts Council. *Gises* (2026) is a production of trilobite-arts DAC and Picture Palace Pictures. We kicked things off in August with *Dont Look Back*, D.A. Pennebaker's legendary portrait of Bob Dylan on tour in 1965. From there we move through the "essay film" genre in September featuring work by Agnès Varda and others, into experimental documentaries in October with Werner Herzog and others, before arriving in November for a rare and special evening of experimental short films spanning a century of avant-garde cinema. December brings it all home with one of the most visionary films ever made. Join us for part 3 of our five-month series exploring the outer edges of nonfiction cinema. This month we’ll explore the weird and poetic world of experimental documentaries. *House is Black*, dir. Forugh Farrokhzad), 1962, 22min *Lessons of Darkness*, dir. Led by the Methodist Reverend Dr. Ted McIlvenna, the NSF began producing films the following year, and was soon supplemented by a distribution arm called the Multi-Media Resource Center (MMRC). The MMRC distributed both NSF films – most of them directed by McIlvenna’s friend and fellow minister Laird Sutton – and erotic avant-garde cinema by a host of filmmakers from the Bay Area and beyond, among them James Broughton, Gunvor Nelson, Barbara Hammer, Jerry Abrams, Jan Oxenberg, and Honey Lee Cottrell. The MMRC was radical not only in its ethos of sexual freedom and openness as compatible with Christian doctrine, but also in its framing of experimental film as a form of sex education. While some films produced by the NSF consist primarily of structured group conversations on topics of sex and sexuality, many depict real couples and friends engaging in unsimulated and unscripted sex. Termed “pattern films” or “sexual cinéma vérité,” they reflect McIlvenna’s belief that “almost all sex problems have been directly related to either a lack of information or else a religiously reinforced sex-negative attitude.” The films of the MMRC concern various aspects of human sexuality and sex education. Many address queer sexuality, women’s sexual autonomy and pleasure, the sex lives of people with physical disabilities, and the intersection of sexuality and aging. Produced in San Francisco beginning in the late 1960s, in the midst of the free love, women’s liberation, gay liberation, and disability rights movements, these films shed light on the historical context from which they emerged. They also played a key role in the development and composition of Sexual Attitude Reassessment, or SAR, a technique originated by McIlvenna and his collaborators that involved multi-day intensive sessions of sexually explicit motion picture and slide film and accompanying discussion. Crucial to the practice of humanistic sexology embodied by McIlvenna’s later venture, the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality, SAR is used to this day – albeit in a modified form – in the training and certification of sex educators and therapists. Despite its contacts with legendary avant-garde filmmakers like Broughton and Hammer, and its long afterlife in the form of McIlvenna’s Institute (which only ceased operations in the mid-2010s, shortly before his death), the MMRC is little-known today. This series will introduce a modern audience to a host of works that have never (or very rarely) been shown theatrically. In the following programs, films that were distributed by the MMRC are paired with those that could have been: erotic avant-garde, educational, and agitprop films from the 1960s and ’70s that share an ethos of free sexual expression. Guest-curated by Lucy Talbot Allen, who wrote the introduction above. Screenings will be introduced by Allen and additional special guests. Presented by Carter Haskins. These four reels are just a small sampling of the Film-Makers' Coop’s vast Stan Brakhage collection. Many of the Coop's Brakhage prints are rarely screened, and many aren’t available anywhere digitally. This screening series highlights the best of this underseen trove of Brakhage’s films. *Tortured Dust* is a woefully underseen and underscreened Stan Brakhage feature, split into four distinct reels but always shown together. The final chapter of his Book of the Film cycle, *Tortured Dust* is a document of the end of Brakhage's time raising his children with his first wife Jane. By the time Stan got around to editing the film, all of his children had moved out, and the editing was completed soon before he and Jane were divorced. A somber and striking farewell not only to this period of Brakhage's life, but also to his family. ___________________________________________________________________ Venue type: *Live, physical event* Visual Studies Workshop <https://us.list-manage.com/QwSQti55Rjo?e=857b71a9cb&c2id=0d67e0aba7fa6a8c62b4e960fe7a49fe> 6pm ET, VSW, 36 King Street, Rochester, New York 14608 *Between Pulse and Stasis: Fragments of Experimental Cinema by Toshio Matsumoto and Takashi Ito* Note: this screening features flickering lights and may not be appropriate for all audiences. How can word and image redefine the limits of film form? OnFilm, in collaboration with the Visual Studies Workshop, invites you to this showcasing of works by Toshio Matsumoto and Takashi Ito. This selection of nine films presents a comprehensive – but by no means exhaustive – series of formal meditations on the material and psychic boundaries of the moving image. Our hope is to present a very specific historiography of Japanese experimental cinema through two figures whose personal and artistic contributions to the medium are as significant as they are imbricated. From Matsumoto’s early reconfigurations of material structures through digital representations of procedural movement to Ito’s chaotically animated procession of still- photographs set against a glitzy pastiche of abstractions, these works invite the viewer to consider the affective and perceptual limits of visual space. Join us for the second screening of OnFilm’s two-part series on Japanese experimental cinema as we close out our selection of films by Toshio Matsumoto and Takashi Ito in collaboration with VSW. Join us at Hallwalls for a screening of short films by Sabine Gruffat, followed by a Q&A with the artist! Beyond Resolution: This series of films favors ambiguity and resists resolution. The nearer the gaze, the more obscure the view. Illegibility here is not an escape from politics, but a way of inhabiting it differently: as a site of tension, friction, and possibility. These films draw from a range of genres and layered techniques. Images are processed to draw attention to the hidden logics in software, hardware, and materiality. In repurposing media, the works call attention to the histories from which meaning’s fragile frameworks emerge. Biography: Sabine Gruffat is a French-American artist born in Bangkok, Thailand. She co-founded and co-programs the Cosmic Rays Film Festival in Chapel Hill, NC with filmmaker Bill Brown. Currently she lives in Marseille, France. Sabine Gruffat works across experimental, animation, and essay forms and exhibits her work as installations, performances, and single-channel screenings. By actively engaging with both current and outmoded technology, Gruffat’s work questions our standardized and mediated world. Sabine Gruffat’s films and videos have screened at festivals worldwide including the Image Forum Festival, The Ann Arbor Film Festival, Migrating Forms, the Viennale, MoMA Documentary Fortnight, Chicago Underground, Cinéma du Réel, 25FPS, Transmediale in Berlin, and The Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival. She has produced digital media works for public spaces as well as interactive installations that have been shown at the North Carolina Museum of Art, Zolla Lieberman Gallery in Chicago, Art In General, PS1 Contemporary Art Museum, and Hudson Franklin in New York. Her collected video works are distributed by the Video Data Bank in Chicago, IL. ___________________________________________________________________ Venue type: *Live, physical event* Cinema Museum <https://us.list-manage.com/1Am1lKWLZ2K?e=857b71a9cb&c2id=0d67e0aba7fa6a8c62b4e960fe7a49fe> 4:30pm GMT+1, The Cinema Museum, 2 Dugard Way (off Renfrew Road), London SE11 4TH, England, UK *The Hart of London (1970) on 16mm* The Cinema Museum is proud to present a series of avant-garde film screenings on 16mm in benefit of the Museum’s fundraiser to buy our home. Our fourth screening of the season is *The Hart of London* (1970), by Canadian experimental filmmaker Jack Chambers. Praised by Stan Brakhage as “one of the greatest films ever made”, *The Hart of London* is shown in black and white and colour, and includes found news footage from 1954, film shot by the artist years earlier in Spain, and film shot by the artist in London, Ontario. The film is preoccupied with the tensions between nature and the city of London: “It explores life and death, the sense of place and personal displacement, and the intricate aesthetics of representation. It is a personal and spiritual film, marked inevitably by Chambers’ knowledge that he had leukemia.” The Cinema Museum is proud this screening of this rare avant-garde film on 16mm, as benefit to the Museum’s fundraiser to buy our home. ___________________________________________________________________ Venue type: *Live, physical event* SAW <https://us.list-manage.com/139kSzlimV3?e=857b71a9cb&c2id=0d67e0aba7fa6a8c62b4e960fe7a49fe> 6:30pm ET, SAW, 67 Nicholas Street, Ottawa, ON K1N 6E2, Canada *The Films of Ella Morton* Please join us for a screening and artist talk by Ella Morton. Ella Morton (she/her) is a Canadian visual artist and filmmaker whose expedition-based practice has brought her to residencies and projects across Canada, Nordic Europe, Greenland, Latin America, Australia and Antarctica. Following a short talk where Ella will discuss her use of the photographic darkroom technique mordançage in her filmmaking practice, we will screen *Crushed Between Ocean and Sky* (2023), Wanderer (2024 ) and *An Uncertain Eternity* (2025). *Crushed Between Ocean and Sky* (25 min): “In late 2021, I set out on a unique sailing journey on the tall ship Bark Europa from Uruguay across the South Atlantic Ocean, towards South Georgia & Antarctica. One week into the trip, the ship ran into a massive storm & the main mast was struck by lightning. The intended itinerary was cancelled & we spent the next two weeks sailing directly to our end destination of Ushuaia, Argentina. This story is told by crew & passengers aboard the ship during the two weeks sailing towards Ushuaia after the lightning strike.” *Wanderer* (12 min): A music video for Linda Catlin Smith’s contemporary music piece of the same name. Performed by the Thin Edge New Music Collective in Toronto & filmed on location in the Faroe Islands. *An Uncertain Eternity* (36 min) follows the journey of icebergs that travel from Ilulissat Icefjord in Greenland to the East coast of Newfoundland in Canada. Narrated by Greenlanders & Newfoundlanders, this film explores the political, social, & spiritual implications of the icebergs & how they are changing as the planet warms. This event is organized by the Ruth and Mark Phillips Professorship in Cultural Mediations (Carleton University), Lightproof Film Collective, The Canadian Film Institute, and the Film Studies Program (Carleton University). *Club SAW is fully wheelchair accessible. Visitors enter SAW at 67 Nicholas Street through the paved courtyard, where a ramp and stairs lead to the entrance’s automated door. SAW’s entrance and Club SAW are located on Level 0. Notions of “dirtiness” and “cleanliness” are re-examined. Centuries of history, of conquering and re-conquering, lie beneath our feet, and the return of the vanquished is inevitable. There has also always been an alternative possibility, within the American landscape, inspired by indigenous culture, of a more peaceful relationship with the soil, the resting place of our ancestors. A collage of poetic imagery, music, and invocatory language, the film follows two men in a series of esoteric experiments. Their words take us to unexpected landscapes, populated by revengeful toasters, flying fiddles, an unusual game of tennis, and a mountaintop crowned with an electric guitar. A postmodern video opera, Dirt bathes the viewer in music, language, and visual spectacle. David Finkelstein is a 2022 Guggenheim Fellow. His video work has been featured in numerous film festivals around the world. His work has been funded by The Fund for Creative Communities, The Field, Movement Research, Meet the Composer, The Brooklyn Arts Exchange, BACA, and other sources. He has been commissioned three times to create videos for the Outmusic Awards, and these videos were subsequently shown on the PrideVision cable network and the PBS series “Under the Pink Carpet.” He also writes reviews of experimental films at Lake Ivan Film Journal. *ONGOING* Venue type: *Virtual, online event* Riverwest Radio <https://us.list-manage.com/MRXGgmQJujj?e=857b71a9cb&c2id=0d67e0aba7fa6a8c62b4e960fe7a49fe> streaming 24/7 *THE LONG CONVERSATION* THE LONG CONVERSATION with Xav Leplae and Stephanie Barber is on indefinite hold.
