409 is your friend, as long as you keep it away from bakelite and other phenolics.
Rust is a problem. Where is the rust? Is it on the gate or just on stuff that doesn't touch the film? A rust stabilizer might be fine if you don't want to polish it all out, on noncritical parts that aren't touching the film.
