Thanks, Ben.  They look interesting.

I've been thinking and reading about this more in the meantime.
Two things worth mentioning:

1. The original Pinephone has only 2.4GHz wifi and only USB2 —
   not really a problem for my usage.
2. Since I last checked, the software for the Pinephone Pro has
   come along quite considerably, so it's probably by now in a
   quite usable state.
