I have to agree with Rod that we need to fix the tools so that there is a transition. IMHO, it is unacceptable to expect EVERYONE to "jump" to the new scheme by installing a new kernel. There is nothing fundamental in the toolset which SHOULD care about the underlying kernel. Compilers, loaders, etc. are just programs that operate on the contents of files. Think of compiling the 4.0 system on a 3.3 system as a simpler case of cross compiling. I should be able to compile FreeBSD 4.0/alpha on a FreeBSD 3.3/i386 system. Someone compiled the new system on an old one. The tools that they used should be available as a "compatability" tool to make the transition.
