ok. For now I've found the really simple solution (I knew there would be
one) I should have found straight away... add IPv6 addresses to the DNS for
the hosts on my network, as IPv4-mapped addresses, i.e.

magnesium               A       192.168.91.34
                        AAAA    ::ffff:192.168.91.34

things seem to be working better now, as the initial IPv6 query
succeeds.
