This isn't true. The 3.0 version of Newtek's Bus Toaster uses a Symbios 53C500 chip. I think Newtek still makes them... Granted, we don't have a driver for that controller either, but the programming manual is readily available from LSI Logic. Seems to me that NetBSD has a driver for it, based on a Linux driver.
