I now see a never ending spew in /var/log/messages of laptop:kargl[232] tail /var/log/messages Dec 26 07:41:12 laptop kernel: wlan0: link state changed to DOWN Dec 26 07:41:12 laptop kernel: wlan0: link state changed to UP Dec 26 07:45:42 laptop kernel: wlan0: link state changed to DOWN Dec 26 07:45:42 laptop kernel: wlan0: link state changed to UP Dec 26 07:49:42 laptop kernel: wlan0: link state changed to DOWN Dec 26 07:49:42 laptop kernel: wlan0: link state changed to UP Dec 26 07:54:12 laptop kernel: wlan0: link state changed to DOWN Dec 26 07:54:12 laptop kernel: wlan0: link state changed to UP Dec 26 07:58:27 laptop kernel: wlan0: link state changed to DOWN Dec 26 07:58:27 laptop kernel: wlan0: link state changed to UP So, the good news appears to be that 3 weeks ago wlan/wpi could stay up for 7 to 9 minutes before cycling DOWN/UP.
