Not quite true.  I'm doing i386 4.4-STABLE -> {i386,alpha} 5.0-CURRENT
builds on a nightly basis, and everything is OK, including last night
builds:

# uname -r
4.4-STABLE
# grep "^>>>" current

>>> elf make world started on Fri Dec 7 03:56:08 EET 2001

Perhaps, you have a non-standard (non-empty) /etc/make.conf,
which I didn't test. I only build with the -DCOMPAT4X option.
I'd like to know what specifically is broken for you.
