PPS: The "/" is mounted from an MFS that is uncompressed from the floppy image read by the disk BIOS from the fake floppy BIOS wedge installed by the CDROM drive controller. If you boot, but can not mount "/", then it's nothing to do with the CDROM driver at all, unless what you are trying to boot is the "live CD".
