It's very easy/quick to (cross) compile world at a beafy machine
and install the system to an USB stick.

I also have an Atom-based netbook and it takes quite long but not that long. I usually compile kernel/world directly there. One battery charge (which make it last~4 hours) is enough for me to do a complete upgrade.
