I'm still using lightdm but have switched from the old character-mode console (kern.vty=sc, BIOS boot) to EFI and kern.vty=vt. The result of this change was not only that ACPI S3 suspend/resume finally started working but also allowed switching back and forth between X11 and character VCs without video corruption (I'm using the nvidia driver in case this makes any difference).
