Hi,

I think some tools could help here. If users are able to submit patches to 
branches they are interested in and some automatic compile/style/whatever 
testing for them, it would already help. See http://www.leidinger.net/blog/ for

The companies/individuals that _could_ run this kind of thing do it
internally. So you're left with volunteers doing the public releases
instead of the vendors who are asking for it.

Honestly, I think the re@ and ports building teams would _love_ some help.
If you'd like to see this happen, step up and offer your assistance. That's
the most likely way to achieve your goal.
